Family Adventures, Lake Swims and a New Coach

Life has been a wonderful mix of family time, Swiss adventures, and a new challenge lately.

Last week, we celebrated my parents’ 64th wedding anniversary by taking them to Lake Lucerne. I think this is my favourite corner of Switzerland. My dad was so excited when he realised we would be taking two different boats: an old-fashioned paddle steamer from 1901 and a very modern boat from 2017.

Of course, I also have to make sure my parents stick to their fitness program. Every second day, we head out for a walk. My dad has decided that they’re going to Paris in September, and I will be accompanying them. However, I introduced one non-negotiable condition: Paris happens only if they can walk 800 metres without a break. With that goal in mind, they are absolutely crushing it!

Then came the annual swim across Lake Zurich. This event is such a blast! During the entire swim, I could only think of one thing: the risotto waiting for me at the finish line. It did not disappoint!

We also met up with our running buddy Reto at the train station. He and his wife took the night train to Vienna and will spend the next three weeks cycling all the way back to Zurich. I find this so inspiring – I would love to do something like that one day!

And while Reto is doing his biking challenge, I have started a new challenge of my own: I have a new coach!

He is one of South Africa’s most successful endurance coaches and is nicknamed “The Colonel” because of his military background. He is known for his rigorous, no-nonsense coaching style.

If you are now thinking “David Goggins“, that is exactly what I was thinking, too.

I was scared, so I waited until I felt brave enough to e-mail him. When he suggested a call a few days later, I was terrified. Oh my goodness, what have I done?

Fortunately, he was less scary than I imagined. But still, he was quite strict and direct – you know, a bit like a school headmaster.

Like, when we talked about my eating habits. How much protein do I eat? No idea, but I’m pretty sure not enough. “Let’s fix that.” So for a few weeks now, I’ve been tracking my protein – I need to reach 2 grams per kg of bodyweight. I began eating chicken and eggs like some kind of bodybuilder pro.

Not surprisingly, a few days in, my digestive system felt… well, blocked. Next fix: enter flaxseeds and their fibre friends to balance things out again. Aside from that little detour, I think The Colonel is on to something. I’m feeling more energetic and less fatigued. I’ll definitely stick with this approach for a few more weeks to see what happens.

Interestingly, my overall training volume has not changed much. I am still running about 8 hours a week. The intensity, however, is a completely different story. Every day is a workout day. Tempo runs, intervals, fartleks, hill repeats, strides, fast finishes… there is nowhere to hide.

Most days, I am struggling to hit the target paces. I also catch myself taking unscheduled breaks, cleverly disguised as “photo breaks”. Something I will need to runfess in my next call with The Colonel…let’s see how that goes!

And YET! I love the challenge. It is demanding, and I collapse into bed exhausted every evening, but I have a feeling this is exactly the kick in the pants I needed right now.

  • Have you ever had a coach who completely changed your approach?
  • Protein: do you track it? What’s your main protein source?
  • A bike holiday: have you ever done one? Where? – I’ve never done one, but I’d love to!

  2. I love how having goal will move people even not active ones. Paris trip is definitely worth walking for.
Your coach sounds intense. workout everyday sounds insane! I need my easy/recovery runs!
I don’t eat animal proteins so my protein intake comes from tofu, beans, protein powder, I get to 1.5-1.8 g per kg, more than that it would be hard.
I now use kotcha, kipchoge’s partner app and dont have a person coach. so far i like it and don’t feel the need to get back to my coach as I feel less barrier to adjust to my needs. with a coach i felt i had to hit the pace/volumne or i”m failing. which may have contributed to my knee issue. now i’m more into my body and know when to step back.
A run tour sounds more fun to me. biking for long gives me lower back pain.

    1. It’s amazing how having a goal changes everything! Just today we went on another walk. This one was in the mountains, so the terrain was quite uneven, but they managed it really well!
I’m curious how long I’ll be able to keep up this training schedule. Thankfully, some of the workouts include an easy running section, and I really look forward to those!
You’re doing well with your tofu intake, Coco! Protein powder would definitely make hitting the target a lot easier. I wonder if I’ll end up going down that route too. It would simplify things!
I know exactly what you mean about the barrier – having a human coach feels much more binding, and there’s definitely a danger of overdoing it just to hit the target. I’ll have to be careful about that!

  3. Oh, the Colonel does sound intimidating but I bet you will see results — as long as you don’t get injured — hopefully there are SOME rest days?

Speaking of a hardcore coach, I love how you are making sure your parents are fit for Paris. 😉 It’s great that they are so active, and the best way to stay active is to stay active. I always want to train for our cycling adventures, but my husband wants to just show up and do it — then he wonders why I pass him going up the hills. 😉

    1. Today is a rest day! 🥳 I’m so happy!!
I think if my parents keep this up, they’ll do just fine in Paris. I love your quote: “The best way to stay active is to stay active.” I’ll have to remember that on our next walk. You can never have too many motivational quotes, right? 😊
Your husband and mine could definitely be best friends… always looking for ways to skip the training and find the shortcuts! 😅

  4. Switzerland is such a beautiful country. My girls are planning a trip there in 2027, mainly because of the scenery. What temperature is the lake, it doesn’t look warm.

I don’t think I could deal with the sore backside from a biking holiday—or the sore legs going through the mountains from Vienna. What a trip! I have gone on and off with tracking protein. I am not a vegetarian, but I can’t have much dairy (gives me hives, etc), so everything except dairy.

I hope the coaching continues to go well for you. It sounds intense, but sometimes it’s good to shake things up a bit.

    1. Oh, let me know when your girls will be coming!! July can be quite hot and crowded with tourists, but it’s still beautiful!
The swim was in the Lake of Zurich, and it was WARM because of the recent heat wave – around 21°C.
I get a sore neck after cycling for more than an hour – I always wonder if it’s something about that bike that needs adjusting? 🤔
I noticed that I get hives if I eat too much dairy as well (which is tragic, because I LOVE dairy!). So lately I’ve been getting most of my protein from chicken, eggs, and salmon instead. But I’m definitely not giving up the milk in my black tea!
We’ll see how it goes with the new coach! My biggest concern is getting injured, so I’ll have to be careful and listen to my body.

  5. Your parents are so adorable!! And I love that you are accompanying them to Paris this fall. That would be a dream for me but sadly it will never happen… My dad had both his ankles replaced and while his mobility has improved, he struggles to walk long distances. They have really enjoyed doing Viking cruises through Europe, though, and will do another one next year. They just make sure to pick activities that don’t require a ton of walking. My dad worked in a really physical job (he was an electrician) and didn’t retire until his 70s so he has put his body through the ringer. Poor guy. Luckily my mom is in excellent health so I would go on a trip with her but I don’t know that she’d be keen to leave my dad behind for a week+. We’ll see… I think she’d be most interested in visiting Vatican City as she’s super super Catholic. My top choice would be Paris since I know the city so well. We’ll see if this ever happens. She’s turning 78 next month so if it’s going to happen, it should be soonish… although I would bet money that she will live to 100.

Lucerne looks amazing and that swim would be right up Phil’s alley! We could build a whole vacation around that someday! How long is the swim? Every summer he swims across my parents lake. We are not sure how far it is but think it’s around 2 miles. I think this year I’m going to have him wear my apple watch so we have an idea of how far it is. It takes him about 70 minutes to finish but it can vary depending on how calm/choppy the water is. Admittedly this is NOT my favorite thing he does because I paddle alongside him in a kayak and there are some cross words exchanged at various points because it is hard to keep a kayak pointed at the same spot while maintaining a safe distance between Phil and me… Part of me wants him to experience the kayakers job but not enough to swim 2 miles. I did the swim once 15+ years ago before I knew him and said NEVER AGAIN.

Now onto your coach! He does sound intense but I bet you’ll see results with him! I kind of loosely track protein. My biggest sources are the protein powder in my oatmeal and eggs. We often have a protein at dinner, too. This week’s proteins were ahi tuna (my favorite dinner!), ground turkey in tacos, and ground beef cheese burgers. I get so tired of eating protein, but I get more tired of planning meals. Ha. If I was super wealthy, the first thing I’d hire is a personal chef!

    1. I remember your parents going on the Rhine cruise. What a wonderful way to see the heart of Europe without all the walking!
I really hope you plan that trip with your mom. Maybe one of your sisters could keep an eye on your dad while you’re away? It would be such a special adventure for both of you. And since you know Paris so well, I bet it would be fun to revisit some of your favourite places together. Maybe you could combine it with Rome, if it’s not too much?
My dad is 88 and my mum is 85, so we’ll be taking things very slowly. We’re travelling by train from Zurich to Paris, and once we’re there, I think the hop-on/hop-off bus will be perfect. We’ll probably stick to just the classics: the Eiffel Tower, Champs-Elysées, and Notre Dame.
Two miles is a long swim! My goodness, I wouldn’t attempt that either. This one was 1.5 km, and even that felt like enough. It took me about 50 minutes. 😂 I can just picture the conversation between you both, the swimmer and the kayaker! If I’d accompany Kai on a kayak, I’d definitely be bumping into him, it would be a complete disaster! For our swim, only official safety boats were allowed, and swimming aids like floaties weren’t allowed.

Tuna! We had tuna last week too. I know what you mean by getting tired of protein – it’s not super tasty and hard work to eat (I’d rather have bread and cheese… and wine!). I like the idea of protein powder, I have to look into that. It would make things a lot easier! Oh yes, imagine having your own chef, like the football stars…

  6. The Colonel sounds like a good fit for your training! The one time (emphasis on “one,” LOL) I worked with a coach, I was running a lot more miles than I’d ever done before…and I think I was over-trained (whomp whomp). I’ve never been a high mileage runner, so it was exciting, but also exhausting. I function better with a more conservative mileage regimen, and I know not to mess with that these days 🙂 Congrsts to your parents! Their upcoming trip, with you as their coach, sounds fun!

    1. I hope so, Kim! I think The Colonel and I might be a good match, but I also know I have to be careful. The last thing I want is to get injured because I try to prove I can do everything! I actually think that is one of the biggest challenges with a coach: trusting the process and not feeling like you have to hit every single target at all costs.
It sounds like you learned that lesson from your own coaching experience. More miles are not always better, especially if your body is telling you otherwise.
I hope it will work out with Paris – it’s quite ambitious but we’re all training hard for it! 😅

  7. Liebe Catrina,
Da weißt du, was du zu tun hast.
Aber: Fotopausen sind natürlich immer erlaubt! 😀

    1. Liebe Doris

  8. I love that you are making your parents walk!

Risotto. I hate swimming but for that maybe. LOL

Paris in Sept. I am jealous.

I have been part of training groups with a coach but never a personal coach. good luck. I hoe it works for you.

Nope. I try to eat a lot of protein but I don’t track it.

    1. I actually thought of you today because it’s the Quatorze Juillet. Are you doing anything special with your students?
I hope you can get back to Paris one day, Darlene!
Let’s see how it goes with The Colonel – I just hope it won’t result in an injury.

      1. Fingers crossed for you.

Now I teach technology to social workers. I used to teach high school French. Paris is my love.

  9. I was in lake Lucerne in college and fell in love with the country and the area. I love that you have given your parents a fitness goal for Paris & that they are game to achieve it. Good luck with your new coach!

    1. The lakes and mountains are hard to beat! I’ve been there so often and every time I’m amazed at how beautiful it is.
Let’s see how it goes with the Paris idea! We’re planning it for September when it will hopefully be a bit cooler. The current heat wave in France is tough!

  10. That is so exciting about the new coach! Anyone no-nonsense will bring some positives to your life. Will you be working with him for a specific goal or generally?
Great news about the protein. I’ve learned that in our age we need more protein than when we were younger to get the same results because the body reacts less to protein when we get older, and the generally recommended protein target is way too low. There’s some recent research on this and I couldn’t be happier to hear recommendations are finally changing. I’ve tracked protein for a long time but don’t do it anymore, I’ve learned what sort of foods I need to get the right amount. I aim for about 2,2 grams per kg bodyweight, to build muscle and bone, and if I lift heavier in the gym for a while I’ll try to get a bit more. My best source is chicken but we vary between chicken and lean beef, fish, dairy, eggs etc. I use whey protein powder in smoothies for extra protein if I need to.

It’s so cool about the trip to Paris and getting your parents to walk!! Also I love the top photo from the lake, reminds me of the lake of Como. So beautiful!

    1. I’m so excited, Susanne! My coach thinks I should aim for a sub-3 marathon. I honestly don’t know if that’s realistic, but I’d love to get as close as I can!
I’ve been hearing the same thing about protein as we get older, but I never really took it seriously. When I started tracking my intake, I was shocked by how little protein I was actually getting! Your target of 2.2 g/kg makes perfect sense with all the weight training you do. That’s interesting about the protein powder – I’m thinking about adding that to make it easier. Do you have a favourite brand? And have you ever heard of MAPs (Master Amino Acid Pattern)? I only recently came across it, but apparently it’s been around for years and is supposed to improve protein utilization and muscle recovery.

Paris is planned for September, so I’m hoping it will have cooled down a bit by then! And yes, you’re right, Lake Lucerne really does look similar to Lake Como! I think it must be the green mountains rising straight out of the water.

      1. I haven’t heard of MAPs, but I go with getting the all the essential amino acids (which you do if you eat meat, chicken etc and they are in whey protein too). For protein powder I’m problematic because it has to be gluten-free and it has to be without artificial sweeteners because somehow my stomach doesn’t tolerate them. But there is an excellent Irish brand, Kinetica sports, they have unflavoured whey and good creatine too. They deliver almost the next day. Sadly it seems like they don’t ship to Switzerland or South Africa. Previously I used My Protein, but can’t say anything about the quality of it. Optimum Nutrition is a very good brand many use. I take a protein drink mixing milk, frozen raspberries and a scoop of whey powder (and creatine if I haven’t taken it already) either at breakfast or as a snack midday or just after the gym. Whey is fast absorbed and perfect for straight after a gym session (or long run).

A sub-3 marathon sounds very realistic for you! With the right strategy I’m sure you can do it!

        1. Thank you so much, Susanne! This is really helpful.
Yes, I think you’re right. If you eat chicken, eggs and other animal protein, you’re already getting all the essential amino acids. MAPs are probably more relevant for someone following a vegetarian or vegan diet.
I looked up Kinetica Sports and they have amazing reviews! The only negative one I found was from a guy complaining that there wasn’t a scoop in the package. 😂 That’s probably a good sign! I’ll definitely keep that brand in mind when we’re travelling through Germany. Maybe I’ll be able to find it there.
I’ll also have a look at Optimum Nutrition and MyProtein. I really like the sound of your protein drink! It actually sounds like something I’d happily have after a hard workout.
And thank you for believing in me! 😊 A sub-3 marathon still sounds a little crazy in my head, but I’m happy to let The Colonel dream big. I’ll just focus on getting through the training first and see where it takes me.

  11. Oooh Paris! Oh la la!!! Your French practice will come in so handy! I’m very excited for you. It sounds like you have just been living a dream lately – so much fun stuff here. Congratulations on your parents’ anniversary – they look wonderful, so happy together. What a gift! I like biking but I am very scared of traffic and biking on roads, unless there is a HUGE bike lane, so I feel like a bike adventure is not for me. There are a lot of bike lanes and paths here, which I enjoy, but I sweat buckets from anxiety whenever I have to enter a traffic circle or something. I’d probably dehydrate just from fear alone if I was doing a bike tour! However, it would be a very cool way to get from A to B.
Risotto! Yum. I bet it was delicious!
Congrats on your new coach, I hope it all goes well!

    1. Oh, and no, I don’t track protein or anything else – that way lies madness for me. Tracking is triggering in Nicole World, and so I don’t. I figure as long as I’m feeling good and have good energy (and am not backed up!) I’m just fine.

      1. I get it! And looking at the fresh deliciousness on your plates, I think you are one of the healthiest eaters I know.
Feeling good with top energy means you are doing it right!

    2. I finally get to practice all that French! I bet the Parisians will be delighted – another annoying tourist who wants to practice their terrible French on them, haha!! 😅
I like how my parents are game for anything – tomorrow, for example, we’re taking them to and outdoor cinema that starts at 10pm at night (we’re going to watch “The Sheep Detectives”). I think that’s what keeps them young!
“Dehydrate out of fear!” Haha, you are hilarious, Nicole! 😅 I know exactly what you mean about the traffic. We’d have to plan a bike tour for you that stays entirely on quiet country roads. I’m sure you’d enjoy that much more! And you’d absolutely excel at packing for a bike tour… minimalism on steroids! 😄

  12. That lake! Those views! YOUR PARENTS. #LifeGoals.
I love Paris, but just about any European city requires a lot of walking. That will be a fun trip.

I don’t track anything. I used to track… a lot. Objectively, I was a healthier. I weighed less, my cholesterol levels were better, but I was truly obsessive and it really impacted my mental health. I was restricting food and focusing SO much on what I ate. I tracked all my exercise and closed my Apple Watch rings… even if that meant I had to run laps at the bottom of my bed in the dark because I remembered once I was heading to sleep that I hadn’t finished my step count or daily run, etc.

I do feel like I might have the mental space for that a bit as I get older, but right now life is very hectic with a teen/tween and I need to eat and move my body intuitively.

    1. I’m so glad we had nice weather for the Lake of Lucerne! I’m quite amazed at how adventurous my parents are for their age. However, they also tend to overestimate their energy levels. So I think for Paris, we will use a Hop-on/Hop-off bus so that they don’t tire out too soon.
Oh yes, I completely understand why you stopped tracking. Nicole also mentioned it as triggering for her. It sounds like it crossed the line from being helpful to becoming stressful. Running laps at the bottom of your bed just to close your rings made me laugh! But it also shows how easy it is to become obsessed. I think you’ve found a much healthier balance. And I can imagine that having a teen and tween keeps life pretty full!
The only thing I’m tracking at the moment is my protein intake because I’m genuinely curious how much I’m actually eating. Hopefully once it becomes second nature, I can stop tracking that too. I definitely don’t want it to take over my life!

  13. Congratulations on the new coach. That will change things in your routine without a doubt. Now how will that affect Kai? Is he joining in the diet change and the training too. Do you have a goal race in mind?
I don’t track my food. I eat exactly what I want and how much I want. Lucky for me, even though I have not run in 4 months, my weight stays constant.
Paris with your parents should be interesting. I suspect there will be some interesting museums, bistrots, cafés, some longer walks and some tourist sites too.
Bike adventure. Yep been there done that with no hostels nor hotels. Just sleeping in fields and in forests, carrying all what we needed. Cooked on a camp stove, carried a tent and bike repair gear. There were several of these. The longest was 8 weeks. So yeah do it. Europe is a great place for it. Just need to plan it. Kai is that master planer I hear. hahaha

    1. Thanks, Yves! I’m glad that the training part doesn’t take more time out of my day, but it I do feel more committed to it. Right now, it feels like regular marathon training, although the next marathon will only be early next year! The goal race will either be Tokyo in March (IF I get in) or Zurich in April. Interestingly, Kai is joining in… he likes the new protein-focus and makes sure there’s always enough chicken and boiled eggs. And he even joined me for a round of fartleks!
I think if you’re feeling good there is absolutely no need to track food. With all your garden produce and home-made bread, I’m sure you’re diet is super-healthy!
Paris… my dad sees himself sipping a coffee in a bistrot (with a croissant on the side) while admiring the Eiffel Tower…I hope we can get close to his “vision”! 😅
Wait, what? You biked for 8 weeks with no hotels? That’s super hardcore, Yves! Completely different level compared to Reto’s comfy tour with hotels. Did you do that with Pearl or with friends? And which countries did you travel?

      1. Paris. Do go to the RODIN museum. It is one of the best museums anywhere. If you like 3D and sculptures and even if you don’t, you will be astonished by the mastery of the works. It is crazy good.

Musée de la musique. Amazing without a doubt. It is located inside the Philharmonie de Paris (Cité de la Musique) at Parc de la Villette. It features over 1,000 instruments on display from a total collection of 7,000 pieces, chronicling Western music from the 16th century onward alongside global traditions. Famous violins to famous rock guitars and more. Definitely fun to go to.

I am sure a nice coffee and croissant looking at the E Tower or even in Montmatre would be inspiring. How long are you planning?

Bike camping was before Pearl. Was w friends and all in Canada except for a trip in Spain where we always slept between the rows of cornfields. In Spain we were in Basque land along the northern coast. San Sebastien to La Coruña to Santiago de Compostella. Just being outdoors all the time except when we were in food stores to resupply. We burned about 5,000 cal daily. We never seemed to have enough to eat.

Great to hear Kai is joining the change of menu. Helps when everyone eats the same way willingly. 😅💦💦💦 Guten Appetit😅

        1. Oh, thanks for all the Paris tips, Yves! The Rodin Museum sounds wonderful. I actually love sculptures, so I’ll definitely put that on the list. It would be especially fun to see “The Thinker” in real life – not only because it’s such an iconic work, but also because that happens to be my (well, actually Kai’s) surname! 😊
The Musée de la Musique also sounds fascinating. I had no idea there was a museum like this! My mum likes music, so that might be something she would enjoy. My dad bought a book about Paris and is now happily choosing all the places he wants to see. We’ll be there for 5 days in the first week of September. And we’ll be taking the TGV from Zurich, which is also a first-time experience for all of us!
Ah, Canada and Spain! How cool is that! When you’re young, you do crazy things… and I can absolutely believe that you were burning Tour de France-level calories. I don’t think you were exactly cycling at a leisurely pace! 😂
We just had salmon (it was on sale!) and salad for dinner. Danke, es war sehr gut! 😄

Was denkst du darüber?
577 km in 4 Tagen?!

Es erinnert mich ein bisschen an den berühmten Spruch “you can’t manage what you don’t measure”. 😅
Was ich besonders schön finde: Du gehst immer wieder neue Projekte an – Laufen, Radfahren, Wandern, Schwimmen, gesund essen.

Ah, du nimmst also auch Leinsamen!

          1. Das Öl ist hitzempfindlich, also weniger koch-/bratgeeignet. Und es sollte im Kühlschrank Lagern.
            LG, Elke

  16. That will be amazing to go to Paris with your parents and its great that they are working towards their walking goal! Your new coach sounds pretty intense! I hope that it goes well!

    1. I hope it will all work out, Lisa! We will be going in September and my parents are really looking forward to it.
Yes – it’s going to be an interesting journey with The Colonel. I’ll let you know how it goes!

  17. Happy Anniversary to your parents! What a great milestone to celebrate! You set a great walking goal for them and that will definitely pay off in Paris.
All the best with your new coach! He does sound kind of intimidating, but I know you will be amazing. I do track protein and I get about 1.5g per kg of bodyweight, not 2x. Oh well. It is a lot to take in for sure.
I found a high protein Greek yogurt that also has fiber in it. I eat that with berries, and it helps with things being “blocked” haha!
Years ago, I worked with a coach who was a former Olympic triathelete. She was ROUGH and very demanding. But at the end of the day, she failed to train me for the specific course I was going to be racing on. I should’ve been doing more hill work and running downhill as well. I took that to heart with my own coaching, and I ALWAYS review the racecourses my athletes will be running on. Live and learn!

    1. Thank you, Marcia! I really hope all those training walks pay off in Paris. 😊
It sounds like you’re doing really well with your protein intake! 1.5 g/kg is already a lot. I was nowhere near that before I started tracking. And that Greek yogurt sounds perfect – high protein and fiber is exactly what I need! 😂
Your experience with that coach is really interesting. She may have been tough, but missing something as fundamental as course-specific training is quite a BIG oversight. I love that you took that lesson and turned it into something positive for your own athletes. That’s what makes a great coach: learning from experience and making sure your runners are prepared for the race they’re actually going to run.
I’m hoping The Colonel has done his homework too! 😄 So far I’m enjoying the challenge, even if I sometimes wonder what I’ve got myself into. Oh, and I was meaning to tell you: there’s a sliver of a chance that I can get into Tokyo in March! I’ll keep you updated!

  18. Liebe Catrina,

  20. Oh, how wonderful you were able to spend time with your parents for their 64th (!) anniversary – how impressive! – and I love to see how they keep fit, so they can go to Paris! I love it. You come from fit family! 🙂

I am excited to hear more about the work with your coach. I have not used a coach for my running (other than group coaching), but it sounds like he has some fresh ideas for you 😉 I do track my protein (but I do not really “plan” my macros). I think most of my protein comes from yogurt/dairy and chicken. I found some yummy chicken meatballs/sausages too. I do not enjoy eating eggs every day, haha. Let me know if you have other good ideas.

    1. I’m so glad they have their anniversary in July, when we’re usually in Zurich! I really hope my parents’ walking training pays off in Paris. I think having a goal makes such a difference – it gives them something to work towards and keeps them motivated.
I’m also very curious to see what happens with the coach. After so many years of doing my own training, it feels exciting (and a little scary!) to have someone else look at it and bring in new ideas.
I think your protein sources sound great! But I know what you mean with the eggs. This morning I had a boiled egg and it felt like a chore, haha! This week, Migros had a salmon on sale, so we bought 2 kilos and had it over a few days with salad. It was delicious! So many here gave the tip with protein powder, so I bought a box two days ago. It’s a lot easier that way to reach my target.

  21. How fun that you are going to Paris with your parents this fall. But even better is the training incentive you’re providing! My parents would never, lol.

Your new coach sounds scary but just the person to get you to the next level. I’m excited to follow your progress!

    1. I think having Paris as a goal really helps keep them motivated!
The coach is definitely a little intimidating, but I think some new ideas and a fresh approach are exactly what I need. Now let’s see for how long I can keep up!

  22. Congrats on hiring a new coach, Catrina! The Colonel sounds like a serious dude who won’t put up with any crap. It sounds like you’re already on a great start with adjustments to your nutrition and types of workouts.

Happy 64th wedding anniversary to your parents! That’s quite impressive. How cool that they want to go to Paris to celebrate and you’re coaching them to increase their walking endurance. Don’t go all Colonel on them, though, okay?

As I mentioned on Strava, I would be terrified to do that open water swim. Not even the lure of risotto at the end would give me the confidence to try. But you? Once again you conquered Lake Zurich and lived to clean your bowl!

    1. Haha, don’t worry, Debbie, I promise not to go full Colonel on my parents! 😂 They are already doing amazingly well, and I think having Paris as a goal gives them a lot of motivation.

The Colonel is definitely serious, but I think that is exactly what I need right now. It’s quite exciting to have someone bring in a different perspective… but I’m not sure for how long I can keep up!

The swim is actually much less scary than it sounds, especially because there are so many swimmers and safety boats around. But I completely understand why open water swimming is not everyone’s idea of fun! Even for risotto!

  23. This is amazing, Catrina. I don’t eat a lot of meat, so I imagine I am quite low in protein. Definitely not 2 grams per kg of body weight.
Your mom and dad look amazing. Sixty four years of marriage is incredible. You would be a great person to have to encourage them to stick to their fitness program.

    1. I was actually surprised how low my protein intake was when I started tracking it. There are so many good sources besides meat, though – dairy, eggs, fish, tofu, beans and lentils all help.
And thank you about my parents, Carl! I feel very lucky that they are still so curious and willing to take on new adventures. Paris is definitely a great motivation for them. We will be going by train because it’s the easiest way to get there!

  24. That swim looks like such fun – there must be such a vibe with so many people. Not nearly as fun to do if you were all by yourself (and with no risotto at the end!)
Congratulations to your parents on their 64th wedding anniversary, it’s wonderful that you are able to see them and celebrate with them. I’m sure you are all going to enjoy your Paris trip so much more if they have got a bit more stamina for walking.
Your new coach sounds both scary and exciting. Your runs on Strava are certainly looking impressive! How are you doing on your protein goals two weeks down the line? Already sick of boiled eggs?! I find breakfast the hardest meal to get protein, I don’t really want eggs for breakfast!

    1. Thank you, Nicola! 😊 The swim really is such a fun event. The atmosphere is amazing, and I’m always impressed by the logistics (all 9’000 swimmers get their right bags at the other end!). The risotto is the BEST!
I think the walking training will make a big difference in Paris. My parents are really embracing the challenge, which is lovely to see. I will still have to put a plan together!
I just had a boiled egg right now and I tell you… I’d rather have a creamy porridge! I’ve added a protein powder as well (with vanilla taste) which really helps. Otherwise it’s going quite well and I have to say, it really makes a difference!
This afternoon I will have a call with my coach. He wants me to do very long long runs (like 4 hours) and I don’t quite see the point of that… let’s see what he says!
