Crossfit!

I was scared when I entered the Crossfit “box” two weeks ago. I had signed up for a trial session with Kaitlyn. I can’t even hold a decent dead hang, never mind a strict pull-up. What was I even doing here?

Kaitlyn greeted me with a warm smile and a wrench-like handshake. She would have been a perfect cast for Wonder Woman.

She showed me around and then we got to work. After a warm-up, I was to do 30 minutes of 300m rows and then 12 toes to bar, as many rounds as possible. The idea with the “toes to bar” thing is that you swing your legs high enough that your toes can touch the bar you are hanging from. There was no way I could do that, so I did high knees instead.

I was a sweaty mess at the end. I still have blisters on the palm of my hands from that day.

But that’s what I was looking for, right? Getting out of my comfort zone and doing hard stuff.

The workouts are usually structured in four parts:

  1. warm-up,
  2. work on a specific skill,
  3. the actual workout out of the day (the “WOD”, with very loud music),
  4. a) lie down in a sweaty heap on the floor, b). cool down.

I love the vibe and the camaraderie at the Crossfit box. My favourite class so far was the one where we had to work as a team of two. My partner was Ernestine, the only other woman in the class of 14 participants. Ernie was a young mother of two kids and also a runner.

Together, we had to carry a 15kg (33lbs) dumbbell out on the street to the bus stop and back. This was a “Farmer’s Carry”. Ernie carried the dumbbell on the way out and me on the way back. Then, back in the box, we had to do 2 front squats and 2 push presses with a 30kg (66 lbs) barbell.

Easy, right?

The problem was that we had to add 2 more front squats and push presses every time we returned to the box. The goal was to reach a set of 20 within 22 minutes. We split the work quite well so that we successfully finished the workout in 19 minutes 50 seconds. We were both a sweaty mess at the end.

On the Achilles front, I tried something new last week: I went to see a Chiropractor. Her name is Eleanor and she looks like Wonder Woman, too. I asked her if she does Crossfit and she said yes – Crossfit and underwater hockey (it looks as crazy as it sounds).

Eleanor stuck her needles in my calf and did some scraping. I think it’s helping!

Meanwhile, I’m enjoying our daily walks. However, I can’t wait until these walks will turn into runs one day.

  • Fitness classes – do you rather train alone or in a class format?
  • Have you ever had dry needling and scraping done?

I’m joining Kooky Runner and Zenaida’s link-up, Tuesday Topics. I’m also joining Runner’s Roundup with Mile By Mile, Coach Debbie Runs, Confessions of a Mother Runner and Runs with Pugs.

  1. Oh my goodness that sounds scary and wonderful at the same time! I´m even more tempted to give crossfit a go, once this pesky tenacious flu lets go of me, Getting a good sweat feels amazing.

I´ve had acupunture done once on my shoulder – that´s pretty similar to dry needling, isnt´t it? It did help with the pain and the swelling a lot, I remember. Hope your leg improves soon1

    1. The Nordic countries have so many talented Crossfitters, Riitta! The women from Iceland are legendary. I’m pretty sure you would enjoy it. I hope that the flu soon leaves you alone – that can be so annoying and draining.
I think acupuncture must be similar. I’m glad to hear that it helped you – every recovery story is so inspiring to me right now! 🙂

  2. Woohoo! I’m so impressed that you took the plunge. I hope you continue to ‘enjoy’ CrossFit. It’s really been a game changer for me. BTW, we don’t have a coffee bar at our box. Hmmmmm

Glad to hear you are on the mend! You’ll be back to running soon, I think.

    1. Thanks for your inspiration, Wendy! I’m glad you stuck with it and posted about it every week. Otherwise, I would have completely forgotten about it.
You need to tell your Crossfit folks to get a coffee bar asap!
I hope so… my running break is now close to 2 months. Ugh.

  3. I have friends who do CrossFit. That would definitely scare me.

I have to say when I strained my calf a few years ago I went to a chiro for the first time. She did ART which involved scraping. It hurt but I’m sold She cured me like she promised. She helped many of my friends.

Fingers crossed it works for you.

    1. I think you would enjoy the vibe and the friendly people at Crossfit. And you could scale the workouts to fit your level (that’s what I need to do all the time).
I’m so happy to hear that, Darlene! Every successful recovery story is music to my ears.

Macht richtig Spass!

Danke dir, liebe Margitta! 🙂

  5. Liebe Catrina,

so so, hard Stuff brauchst du … und denn gleich in ner Folterkammer tummeln? 😆

  6. I knew Wendy would give a big Woohoo to this post!! I’m terrified to try something like this so I can almost feel what you felt before going in – so a HUGE well done for starting something out of your comfort zone! Those purple flowers on your walk pictures are stunning!

    1. Haha, I’m glad she approved, Shathiso! 🙂
Thank you! It was especially daunting because I was alone. Kai decided not to join me (for now at least, let’s see how long it will take me to convince him). But I’m so glad I tried it! Now, I feel less scared and I’m getting more used to it.
We finally have blossoming jacaranda trees as well!

  7. Um…. no, none of this sounds “easy!” It sounds really hard, but fun, in a grueling, daunting kind of way. I think you’re getting a much better workout that if you were just trying to do it on your own. i’m hoping to hear more about this as time goes on!
Acupuncture and scraping sound great- I agree with Wendy that you’ll be back to running soon.

    1. Walking into that box was so scary Jenny! But I’m glad I did. I think you would love this, too. Would be perfect to do it on an off weekday.

Remember that post you did about the importance of lifting heavy weights as we grow older? It was about the book “Next Level” by Stacy Sims. It resonated very strongly with me. Your post and Wendy’s weekly Crossfit adventures got me to the box!!

      I hope I’ll be back to running soon – I can’t wait!

  8. Chiros can do magical things to help you heal! I’m glad you went. Hooray for CrossFit! I used to go see “Coach Lucifer” but quit when he left our box. I still do lots of the stuff I learned there here at home though. Sounds like you had a great experience!

    1. I felt so much better after two sessions with the Chiro-lady! I should have done this earlier.
Haha, Marcia, Coach Lucifer!!! That’s hilarious!! I’m sure you can apply a lot of the Crossfit training principles at home – you have the right fitness studio for it, too!

  9. Liebe Catrina,

  10. I am psychic, so I know how this story is going to turn out. “I am a runner who had to stop running due to an injury for [unknown amount of time]. I started doing Crossfit just to have something new to try. Then my running injury healed and I started running again stronger and better than ever.”

Good luck on your journey! This is exciting!!!

    1. HAHA!! Birchie! I hope you will be soooo right!! In any case, I hope Crossfit helps me with the running too once I get back to it.
Come to think of it, Caroline Girvan looks like Wonder Woman, too. I think we’re both on to something here!

  11. Oh that is fun. I used to live near a gym like that & went there 7 days a weeks working lower & upper body alternating. Also daily spinning classes & group body pump every other day. It was a lot of fun working out. Since Covid19, everything is weird & now I live way too far to go to any of these.

Group working out is the best. Solo is hard because of how boring it is. Having others doing the same as you is fun🌞 You will see a huge improvement in your running when you get back. I would continue even after you start back running. One day run, one day crossfit or even run easy & crossfit on the same day. You will be super woman too 👟🦵🏃‍♀️💨💨💪😂

    1. You did Body Pump, Yves?!? I loved that!!! I can’t imagine you going to the gym 7 times a week. Covid 19 did change our lives, didn’t it?
Like you, I went to the gym several times a week. I especially loved the Body Pump classes. But then 2020 happened and I never went back. Much like you, I had my workouts at home.
Exactly! It really struck me when I was in the box in my first group workout. So much more fun!! That is precisely my plan: alternate Crossfit and running and combine it on easy days. It should be a great combo!

Hope you will get those knots sorted in your feet. Was that at the orthopedist?

We’re going kayaking this morning. Hoping for whales but they might be hiding. Should be a blast either way! 🙂

      1. Body Pump & Spinning was amazing for Cardio & Strength. Did that for 20 years or so. 💪🦵

Winter is here, with the first snow. Snowing like crazy now as I type this. Did not get the tulip bulbs in the ground though. May still be time?🤔

Hope the whale watching well well! 🌞

Great to hear that you will continue the crossfit. Sounds like you pay as you go! Is that not expensive that way? Or is it the only way? Have fun w that super woman or is that wonder woman?😂

          1. I’ll need to add that to my list. Seeing a spooky therapist tomorrow… some cell stimulation stuff. Not sure if this works but I’ll try it! 😀

        1. 20 years! Wow! I only discovered it in 2012, I always enjoyed it.
Snow! It’s here! Radar will love it. ⛄️ You might a breather for the poor tulips! 🤣

I got a subscription for 10 times. It’s about USD 8 each time, only slightly more expensive if I sign up for 3 months. I will do that when we get back from Switzerland in January. May the Wonder Woman happen! 😂🤣😂

          1. Oh going back home in January? Skiing adventure?

You are already a Wonder Woman. Most are sedimentary t be honest. Just the people we hang with are super active.

            Take care

          2. Just boring end-of-year stuff, I’m afraid (and dentist). The only good thing is that we get to see family. 😊
We will be back after 3 weeks.
That’s true! We think everyone is like us! 😄👍🏻

  12. Liebe Catrina,
ui, da kreischen meine Muskeln ja schon beim lesen! Wow, da hast du dir ja ein tolles Alternativprogramm gefunden. 😆

    1. Liebe Doris

  13. I have been a gym goer all of my life and crossfit scares me. It is fun to try something new. Ah the scraping and the needles been there fun times. Hope it helps!

    1. It’s such a humbling experience. But the lessons are great and just fly by.
Haha, everybody has been there, right? 😄 I hope it helps too!

  14. I’ve never tried crossfit but it sounds like a great workout! Its awesome that you are trying something new! I have done dry needling a bunch of times and usually it helps. Fingers crossed for you!

    1. It’s scary to try something new but I’m glad that in every class, there’s usually another new person. So at least I’m not the only one who has no clue! 😉
I have another session tomorrow – I hope it works!

  15. My husband is a recent convert to Crossfit – he is really starting to enjoy and see the benefits. The class format works well for him.

    1. So glad to hear that! I can see why the classes would appeal more to men – it’s very loud and sweaty. 🙂

  17. Eep! That’s a big needle! I am all done with metal in my body, so that’s a no for me!

Beautiful views again. Those purple flowers are incredible.

I am so glad you had a great time at the crossfit box. I don’t LOVE group classes but they can be so fun and so motivating.

    1. I was glad I had my back turned to the needle! Fortunately, the pain is bearable.
It’s the first time to be back since 2020. I forgot how good it feels! 😄

  18. I tried Crossfit a few years ago but had mixed feelings. I really loved the variety of all the moves, but because I was very new to that type of fitness, I injured myself. The coach for the classes wasn’t that great but I think if I had more instruction, I would have enjoyed it more.

    1. Oh, yes, it’s easy to get injured in Crossfit. I’m already noticing a cranky shoulder and a niggly knee. I think you would do very well in Crossfit now – you’re strong and you would enjoy the vibe.

  19. Ow — scraping for the achilles sounds painful. I’ve had dry needling in my calf. I didn’t like it and it didn’t seem to do anything helpful, so I never tried it again.

I think I would have fun in crossfit, but also overdo it and probably get hurt in new ways—as opposed to just hurting in new ways! I did used to love my orangetheory classes.

    1. Funnily enough, the needling isn’t painful at all. I’m not sure if that is a good thing – I think the more painful, the more effective. When I had the needling done yesterday, she hit a very painful spot. I hope it’s working!

Yes, it’s easy to get hurt in CrossFit! I’m already experiencing some shoulder and knee pain. Ah, there’s always something, right? 😀

  20. Well done with the crossfit. Getting out of our comfort zones is the best way to improve in life (in my opinion!) That really looks like a lot of hard work. There is a crossfit gym about 10 minutes away from where we live. My wife wants to try it out. Maybe if she starts I’ll get the courage to go along and give it a tester session too.

I’m more of a solo person by preference, but there is no doubting the fact that partnering up is good for us in many ways. Workload splitting, divide and conquer, team building etc!

As for the needles and scrapes. No, not for me, at least not yet. I winced just looking at that photo above 😮 I really hope it helps you out though!

    1. Your wife would enjoy it! The Crossfitters have a great vibe and are very supportive of newbies. I just went yesterday again and I’m still feeling the sore muscles. I think you would enjoy it too, although it’s very different from running outdoors on beautiful trails. You would appreciate that it is very “basic” – no frills, no fancy equipment, no mirrors, just the bare minimum like bars, weights and ropes.

You don’t feel the needles, Sean! (well, hardly…) 🙂
I hope it’s helping… the Achilles is getting better, albeit VERY slowly.

  21. I’ve had both dry needling and scraping for two different issues and both worked. Here’s hoping this will put you on the road to recovery!

I’ve never worked out at a CrossFit, but have several friends who do and love it. Good luck and have fun!

    1. I’m glad to hear that, Debbie! I love hearing success stories, it gives me some hope!
I’ve just been to Crossfit again this morning. I love the upper body workout that I get from it – it’s a part of the body that I’ve neglected for too long.

  22. South Africa looks so beautiful, Catrina. Wonderful you can still get out on your walks. The crossfit does sound intense. I do need to get out of my comfort zone as well. Wonderful you are getting the Achilles looked at. Hope you have a great week! 🙂

    1. South Africa is a beautiful place and I’m so grateful we get to explore this country.
Crossfit is very intense – every time I go, I am so sore the next day! I wouldn’t be doing this amount of strength work on my own, so it’s very helpful to be in a class setting.
Wishing you a great week as well, Carl!
