I Made My Own Electrolyte Drink!

My mouse cursor was hovering over the ominous “buy now” button. I was about to spend USD 55 on 8 tubes of Nuun. Nearly USD 7 for each tube containing 10 electrolyte tablets. With two runners in the house, we go through those tubes quickly.

“There must be a better way”, I thought. “How about if I mix the electrolyte drink myself?”

Interestingly, most experts agree that sodium is the only electrolyte of importance for exercise over an hour. Although potassium and magnesium are lost as well, their concentration in sweat is so low that it’s not a problem. These can be easily replaced later on with real food.

Here’s the baseline recommendation and how it compares to the various brands:

Not surprisingly, for all brands, the key ingredient is sodium.

Next, I looked for a recipe and found a good one at “The Planted Runner“. Claire used the following for 16oz / 0.5 litre of water:

  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda (307mg sodium)
  • 1/16 teaspoon Morton’s Lite Salt (87.5mg potassium and 72.5mg sodium)
  • 1/16 teaspoon Epsom salt (30mg magnesium)
  • optional flavours such as juice or tea

I adapted the recipe to products that can be found in Switzerland. I read that coconut water has a lot of potassium, so I decided to add 100ml of that (which added another 106mg sodium, 253mg potassium and 24mg calcium).

When Kai saw me measuring 1/16 of a teaspoon, he said it didn’t look very scientific. In fact, he thought it looked slightly ridiculous. He was right.

Which gave me an idea: I could prepare a concentrated solution with ten times the amount and keep it in the fridge. Measuring larger quantities is easier and I would only need to dilute it by 1:9 whenever I needed it. That way, I’d have 5 litres (1.32 gallons) of hydration ready.

Unfortunately, Kai didn’t like the coconut water. He decided to go with a Nuun tablet and leave the field testing to me.

Which I did on Saturday’s long run. Kai mixed while I took photos:

This run was going to be 4 hours so my concoction needed to hold up. A few photos from that run:

Result: my electrolyte concoction held up! The mixture was exactly right – I never felt depleted or exhausted (or sick!).

For Kai, we needed to do another field test, this time with pineapple juice. We tried it out on yesterday’s long run (3.5 hours) and it held up, too!

Admittedly, making your own sports drink isn’t as easy as dropping a tablet into water. But it’s quick to make and a great way to save money!

  • Do you use electrolyte drinks? What brand?
  • Would you make your own sports drink or is it too much of a hassle?

  1. That sounds like a great idea! I don’t have much experience with electrolyte drinks, but do some of them contain preservatives and other chemicals? In that case, making your own would be healthier, as well.
Lovely photos as always. I can’t wait to visit Switzerland and see it all for myself again 🙂

    1. Yes, exactly, Kat! Most brands try to include natural flavours, but a number of them have artificial flavouring and colouring and other mysterious ingredients. By making it yourself, you know what you’re drinking.

Not long anymore and soon you will be seeing the mountains for real. Something to look forward to!

  4. After my workouts I drink potassium and magnesium and I eat a banana. For lunch proteins or carbohydrates and many vegetables. Beautiful photos, you run on tough but scenic routes. The insect hotel is very interesting and as an animals lover I will buy one of them.

    1. That sounds like a well-balanced diet, Stefano! That is a great way to stay fit and healthy.
What do you drink during workouts? Or are you fine without anything?

That’s so cool that you will get an insect hotel! They are so helpful for many animals, including birds and bats. And I also love seeing unmowed lawns with flowers for the bees. It’s becoming more and more acceptable to allow a lawn to grow, which is great.

      1. During the workouts I drink only water. On summer I follow routes with fountains to refresh if it is too hot and to rehydrate.

  5. Very interesting.

I only drink water and for long runs I eat GU which has electrolytes in it.

Working from home allows me to eat whatever before I run. When I go back to work I’ll be back to bars and bananas.

    1. That’s one of the great things about working from home – you can fuel perfectly before a run. But bananas and bars sound good, too!

Water and GU are a great combo if you can stomach it – I somehow dislike the consistency and the taste of the gooey gels. I need to give it another try one day.

  6. I have many recipes for electrolyte drinks. Luckily Nuun, which is my favorite, is much cheaper here. That and I’m not running long distances. I actually drink it before (when it’s really hot) and after, and just water during.

I use Saltstick chews during. I actually wanted a few after my 8 mile run last week, and knew I had a couple in my bag — I haven’t used them at all this year! — yet they were nowhere to be found.

Good for you for giving it a go & being successful, too! I’m really prone to cramping, and Nuun really works for me, so i’m sticking with it for now.

    1. Of all the brands, I like Nuun best. So good that the tablets are cheap in the US! I checked the ingredients and they are one of the brands that don’t use artificial colouring or flavours.
Nuun is expensive, both in Switzerland and in South Africa. If I hadn’t tested this mixture, I would need to fly to the US and buy a few tons of Nuun. 🙂

I have never tried Saltsticks chews. I’m sure the ones you were looking for will turn up again – probably when you least need them, ha!

  7. This is really interesting as I’ve never thought to make my own electrolyte drink but this is such a good idea, and way more affordable too! When I start to run longer distances again, I will try this out.

I’m glad that you were successful and that you liked the drink! Like Kai, I also don’t like coconut water but the pineapple juice sounds great!

    1. I was surprised by how easy it was, Kim! The ingredients cost me as much as one tube of Nuun and will last me for several months – maybe even longer. This makes me wonder about how high the profit margin must be on these products.

I hope you get to try it out one day – and yes, go with the pineapple juice!

  8. Tell you what, in this scenario, you are Ditiro and I am Kai! LOL! Ditiro the creator and me the supporter but sometimes reluctant taster! Haha! He is always horrified at how much some of these rehydration solutions or gels cost and has made it his mission to experiment! Most of his home-concoctions he uses on his long bike rides, but he made a quick and basic one the other day – just some salt and sugar, that did the trick for me when I was feeling a bit depleted after a run! I’ll ask him to try your recipes!

    1. Oh, so cool! Ditiro makes his own concoctions!! And you are the taster, haha!
I was thinking about adding sugar, but when I added the pineapple juice it seemed to have enough sweetness.

In South Africa, the price of Nuun (or most other imported brands) was exactly the same as here in Switzerland. So expensive!
I’m glad I found this simple solution. You should do a post about Ditiro’s inventions – perhaps he also experiments with nutrition?

  9. So far, I haven’t used any electrolyte drinks during my run. I just drink water. I did try eating gummy bears last year, but found I could only handle a couple, then they started upsetting my tummy. I will sometimes drink Gatorade after a long, sweaty workout. I would definitely try making my own. I’m all about fewer artificial things in my food/drinks and who doesn’t want to save a little money.

    1. Oh yes, Vicky, this homemade version is definitely better because you know what’s in it. According to what I read, you are fine with hydrating with water if you’re running under 60 minutes. After that, it can get tricky, especially if it’s very hot and you sweat a lot.
This is so easy and simple to make – I should have thought of this a long time ago.

      1. I definitely sweat a lot. I seem to do okay with just water for about 90 minutes. Then, I need something else. I used Gatorade a couple of times last year. I’ll have to try your concoction.

        1. I sweat a lot, too! The other day we went hiking with another couple and I was sweating buckets while my friend was perfectly UNsweaty. 🙂
I hope you get to try the concoction, Vicky!

  10. So so, liebe Catrina,

Hm, was hast du dir wohl vorgenommen? Wir bleiben gespannt… 🙂

  11. What a great idea, Catrina! I’d have to pass on the coconut water, as well, but I’m totally on board for pineapple juice! I need to look for the salt stick chews…I’ve tried Nuun, and it’s not my gig (too fizzy), though the flavors are good. I’m going to give your recipe a try 😉

    1. The pineapple juice gives that light touch of sweetness which is quite nice on a long, sweaty run!
I hope you get to try it out, Kim! It’s so easy and costs a fraction of the marketed brands. 🙂

  12. That is a great idea! I am not a coconut water person but i do love the idea of making your own. It can be pricey for sure. I usually use SIS tabs as my go to.

    1. I had never tried coconut water before so I had no idea what to expect. I understand why people don’t like it! I think I will go with the pineapple going forward.
SIS tabs have a good sodium ratio!

  13. I’m a big fan of plain ol’ water, so my electrolyte of choice is salt stick chews – that way I don’t have to mix anything. But if I ever did want to try a drink – oh heck yes I would be totally down to make my own!

    1. Plain old water is my favourite, Birchie! For anything under 90 minutes, I just go with that, too. I think you’re onto a good thing with the salt stick chews. I guess they are also cheaper?
I hope you’re thoroughly enjoying your “quitting” time and that you can get to try out the concoction one day!

  14. This is so impressive, and I’m glad it worked out! I would be nervous to bring my own recipe on a long run. I’ve been using Liquid IV but want to find some other options to try out, so thanks for sharing that chart!

    1. Thanks, Lisa!
I was a bit nervous too, especially since I had no backup option for the first field test (other than drinking away Kai’s Nuun, haha).
I hope you get to find the right option that suits you best! It’s so important for those long runs.

  15. Were you ever a lab rat? Too funny🤣 I love NUUN. Did you know as an Ambassador you get very good discounts? I love coconut water even more! Grapefruit juice w beer is the best though! 🤣 Espsom salts. 😬 I don’t know about that.

Himalayan rock salt is what I am talking about. ✋Has many minerals & is fabulous for your concoction. Try it out. I am sure you will approve🤣

Nice run/hike to that top near Lichtenstein, place of many castles. I think that is what they are k own for?🤔

    1. Haha, a lab rat! Not yet, Yves! 🙂
Thanks for the idea of being an ambassador. I don’t think that’s possible outside North America, but I will look into it.
Wait, what?! Grape juice with beer?!? Now I will need to try it out. It definitely sounds interesting!

Ah, Himalayan salts! In the comment section of the Planted Runner, this was mentioned as well. I just checked it out and I see it contains potassium, magnesium, and calcium which give it the light pink tint. Now I must try that!

Yes! Castles! Liechtenstein is interesting – it’s a micro-state (population 35’000) that has its own government (and a royal family!)

      1. I mean grapefruit juice, it is a citrus. Grape may be interesting!? Not sure But I think the sweetness might not be a good combo? Lemonade w beer is fantastic after a good run. Mix 50%. Feels like your mouth went to heaven🌞

        1. Argh! I meant to type “grapefruit”!
Now that you mention lemonade with beer – you are right, we have that too! We call it “panache” and it’s a mix of beer with Sprite (or similar). It’s great! Now I’ll have to try the grapefruit thingy. 🙂

  16. Liebe Catrina,
super Idee!

    1. Liebe Doris
Ah, du machst Salben & Co. selbst? So cool!!

Aber weisst du was? 🙂

  17. I don’t know about the straw beds… I mean, maybe… but bugs? And more importantly — yay for the electrolyte drink! I’m going to try it!!

    1. Haha, I went in and tested the beds – it looked quite bug-free. But now that you mention it, I would search the straw for beasties first!
I hope you get to try the electrolyte drink, Rachel!

    1. Right, Montana! I hope you can try it out one day. A great and easy way to save money!

  18. Stunning pics! I’ve visited Zurich once, and remember my travel companion being totally confused when we saw the signs for the ‘Zee’. I must plan another visit, when we are finally free to travel again.

    1. Haha, that’s funny, because our English-speaking visitors are always confused about the “See”. What sea?!
I hope you will soon be able to travel again, Birdie. Once this Covid-thing is over and done with. I look at the SA numbers every day hoping for a decline…

  19. This is brilliant, and I’m sure just as good as the expensive electrolyte drinks. I’ve heard of ultrarunners who drink only water and then literally just eat some salt every hour or so. There’s obviously no reason to make it too complicated!

    1. I’m so happy this inexpensive concoction really works, Jenny!
Some ultrarunners are so hardcore. But I think they are right – they replenish the body with what it needs. The fancy brands are more about clever marketing…

  20. So cool!

I like Nuun. I love that it’s fizzy, and it sits well with my stomach. I do most of my purchases when I have a discount code, and we can also purchase it locally, so it’s not much to worry about shipping.

PS – I don’t care for coconut water either.

    1. Nuun is my favourite drink as well – if it only weren’t so expensive for us here.
Tomorrow, I’m going to try out cranberry juice. I’m excited to see how that will work out!

  21. Dear Catrina!

With you miles per week I wonder how many litres you have to carry around. I would be thirsty all the time and jump into any fountain available.

I thought vinegar was pretty good if you get over the taste.

    Very nice pictures.

    Have a great weekend.

    Greets

    Ginger

    1. Dear Ginger!
I carry two 500ml bottles and an additional tiny container with my magic concoction dry mix to refill. Luckily, we always come across fountains. The two bottles only last me about 2 hours.

Interesting about the vinegar! I just did a brief google search and yes, you are right! Especially apple vinegar seems to do the trick.
      https://www.runtastic.com/blog/de/apfelessig-vorteile/

For tomorrow, I am planning to use cranberry juice. Next week, I will experiment with apple vinegar…. I’ll let you know! 🙂

You too, Ginger, have a wonderful weekend!

  22. Liebe Catrina,

Meine Töchter machen inzwischen sehr viel selbst.

  23. I have some Nuun in the house but use it rarely, after long hikes in hot weather or something like that.

I’d definitely make my own if I’d need to use it regularly. It is expensive. Like you said, the ingredients themselves are not. I’d use sparkling water and fruit juice.

I like the photos of the unmowed lawn in front of the restaurant and the “roman” road! The kitty too! It’s so pretty out there, where you run!

    1. I used Nuun as well – I like it best out of all the different brands.

Sparkling water and fruit juice are a good start, Firefly. Try adding just a pinch of salt and you already have a great concoction that should do the trick for long runs.

I loved that unmown lawn too! We are seeing that more and more here in Switzerland – it’s great for the bees and other insects.

        1. Haha, Salz feinmahlen und in leere Kapseln abfüllen! Wie genial ist das denn?! Alchemie from Feinsten!

  25. I think I’ll keep stocking up whenever Nuun goes on sale. 🙂 For me, the flavor is key, and I’m afraid I wouldn’t get it right — I don’t like coconut water either, and we don’t usually have juice in the house. Fun experiment though.

    1. Ah, clever, Coco! I wish we would have a Nuun sales here – that never seems to happen.
Oh, I tried cranberry juice yesterday – it’s the best! I’m not going back to coconut water, I think! 🙂

  27. Dear Catrina,
what a great idea. I go through so many electrolyte tablets (Nuun or Hammer Endurolytes) and besides the costs, I’m also annoyed about the packaging. You get so many waste plastic tubes! If it’s really hot, I also take salt tablets (Endurolytes) on top of the Nuun. I just need a lot of salt here. I recently ran with somebody that used the chewable salt sticks. I want to try that, because my salt tablets always take a while to dissolve in my stomach.
Now for your idea – I am thinking of taking a salt that’s already mixed for sports like base salt to make it easier. I will order some of that. I don’t like the messy idea of licking salt, but dissolved in water that might be the solution. Coconutwater or juice for flavor is a brilliant idea. I will report!
Beautiful pictures again and a nice run.
Thanks for being the lab rat for us!

    1. Dear Roni
Now I’ve learned something new again! I just googled “base salt” and I see what you mean. What a good idea! That ready-made salt mixture will save you the painstaking measuring and mixing. I hope this is will work for you. I just tried it with a lacing of cranberry juice – it’s a bit sweet but if it’s just a small amount it works well.
Very good point about the packaging! That annoys me as well, it’s such a waste of valuable resources.
Haha, this lab rat experience really paid off because I learned so much from others in return!
Enjoy your adventures this week, Roni!

  28. This is so amazing, Catrina. You are so incredible. I have used Nuun once. I bought a tube at the expo at the expo at the Toronto marathon a few years back. It did what it was supposed to do, but as you say it was costly. So I never continued buying it.

I am a big fan of coconut water. I’ll put a third of a liter in my smoothie each day after doing my #GVRAT mileage. Races like Pick Your Poison, where there is 4 loops, I have a cooler where I will down some coconut water after each of the 12.5 kilometer loops.

I’m doing a fair bit of walking with #GVRAT, except for the extremely hot, humid days, I don’t work up too much of a sweat. So I don’t use any electrolytes those times. When I am running or on those hot, muggy days, if I am out for a few hours, my “go to” is Roctane Ultra Endurance Electrolyte Capsules. Being in capsule form, they are a quite a bit cheaper than Nuun. And there is a bit of ginger in them, so it helps with gastro issues. I use these capsules all the time during my ultras. Always take more than I need. I have come across runners who were cramping very badly. They work fast to get their electrolyte balance back in check.

You are really on to a great thing here, Catrina. And I love your photos. I see the picture of the famous mapman. And I love the insect hotel. I think you mentioned they are common in Switzerland. In what I am so far aware of, I might be the only one who has them in my village! 😀🏃🏻‍♀️ 🏃🏻🐞

    1. Oh, you love coconut water, Carl! It’s so healthy and, once you get used to the taste, it does a great job at replenishing the body will all the electrolytes. What a good idea to mix it in your daily smoothie – I never thought of that.

A few commenters have mentioned these electrolyte capsules and I really need to try this out. Especially the ones that you take, as they have ginger in them. I could not add this to my drink as it would probably be too overbearing in a drink. Thanks for the recommendation, I will look into the Roctane brand. If they worked for you on all these ultras, for sure they will work for us as well!

Haha, yes, MapMan is our loyal Saturday long run friend. This week, he will be at a 4-day trail run event in the Austrian Alps. It’s about 20k every day but with a lot of elevation. I think he is well prepared!

Enjoy the GVRAT, my friend! It’s an awesome feat!

  29. You are very welcome, Catrina. Out bodies are pretty amazing. They let us know pretty quickly if things are out of synch. Especially when it come to these long runs. Hoping Mapman has a great time! 🙂

  30. I have never made my own electrolyte drink. I usually stick to Nuun, partially for convenience and partially because many races have it. I chuckle at the “ananas” – back when I studied abroad in Germany, it took us a while to realize that ananas meant pineapple and not banana. We were so confused when the ananas gelato tasted tropical!

    1. I like Nuun – if only it wasn’t so expensive over here.
Haha, Laura! I can imagine how confusing that must have been for you! “Ananas” is such a weird word, isn’t it?

  31. Does it really save money in the long run? It seems like coconut water or pineapple juice will add up. And it just seems a little complicated. I tried making my own gels a while back. They were good but I usually don’t take the time and stick with Gu. 🙂

By the way, Nuun has a friends and family speciall right now through 7/11. The code teamnuunlovesyou saves you 25% (not sure if it works in Switzerland though).

    1. Good point, Debbie. I was thinking that about the juice as well. I have now switched to a cranberry juice that is quite cheap and tastes even better.
Thank you for pointing that out! I will look into it as it’s good to have a backup solution. I think these codes only work for the US but you never know!
