Ride The Alps

With 70 road passes, Switzerland is a paradise for cyclists that love challenges. I’m not a great cyclist and therefore I’ve never considered cycling over an Alpine pass before.

In recent years, several Alpine passes close their roads for cars for one day and only allow cyclists. Last Saturday, a pass that wasn’t too far from Zurich was declared car-free for a day, so we decided to give it a try. The pass was a 23k (13miles) ride with 1’300m (4’300ft) of elevation. Four friends agreed to join us.

Our first highlight happened before we got to the starting point: in one of the villages, there was the ceremonial driving down of cattle. Before winter arrives, the farmers take them from the mountain pastures down to the valley. It’s a big celebration and very, very loud with all the cowbells!

Four of us arrived at the starting point in the valley. The other two friends were delayed, so we decided to start without them. No doubt they would catch up with us soon.

Although the ride was challenging, it felt easier than running it, especially on the few flat parts in between.

About halfway, we decided to wait for the other two. However, only one of them caught up with us. So now we were a team of five.

Jürg, friend number six, had problems with his chain. He told us later that a friendly cyclist (who happened to be a policeman) helped him out with all the tools and spare parts.

Jürg texted us to carry on, he would catch up with us. So off we went.

Finally, after two hours, we made it!

At the top of the pass, we had some food and drinks and chilled. It was such a nice and relaxed atmosphere.

Jürg texted us again. He was on his way but too far from the top. He would be happy to meet us on our way down. Which we did.

Finally, our team was complete and we enjoyed the super-fast ride down. This part was definitely easier than running it!

The whole event was for free – and we even got very cool re-usable water bottles and wooden keyholders.

For 2022, we will definitely plan to do more of these car-free Alpine passes!

  1. Liebe Catrina,

  3. What beautiful bell chains/straps the cows have, very festive! 🙂

I haven´t made any definite plans for 2022 yet, but I did talk with a friend that we could look into some 10 km runs for Spring we could do together.

    1. The cows were the stars of the show! And I think they felt it, too!

Ah yes! A few 10k runs in Spring will help you to get through your dark winter, Riitta. I’m looking forward to seeing you do them! Perhaps you can even do a half-marathon in the autumn – I’m sure you would do well.

  4. I love the relaxed atmosphere, it is what I’m looking for when I choose a race to participate in. No noise, green country, beautiful landscape, local food and good friends are priceless.
Glad you enjoyed the ride adventure: the route is very scenic.
I don’t ride anymore because I did it clipless and I don’t want to risk a fall because of the car traffic. In order not to be tempted I sold the bike.
However I use everyday a pedal assisted bike.

    1. Yes, exactly, Stefano! Having no cars made everything so nice and relaxing. No noise, no pollution, no stress. It was wonderful.

I remember you said that about the clips once. I am very paranoid about the clips as well, especially uphill. So for this ride, my husband had to change the pedals for me and I rode uphill without clips. It worked quite well!
I’m glad you use the bike in your everyday life – it’s a great way of getting around and it helps you to keep fit, as well!

  5. Well, I would not hesitate for a second to do this! The cattle drive-down is a neat ceremonial start to the day 😉 I definitely agree some aspects of cycling are harder than running (hills, being a BIG one!). Gravity is not your friend when you’re on wheels, no matter if you’re climbing or descending. The traffic-free aspect is awesome. When we did RAGBRAI, we were on open highways…there was an occasional vehicle, but at the very minimum, because the local peeps knew to avoid all the cyclists LOL Well done, Catrina and company 😉

    1. You would have enjoyed this with Gustavas or Fritz!
Uphill cycling can be so hard because you have to stay in motion… at least with running, you can get a break with walking. I loved the car-free aspect – everything was so peaceful without the sounds of cars (and motorbikes!).
I thought about your RAGBRAI during our ride, Kim. I tried to remember whether your roads were car-free or not. There’s the answer! So cool that the vehicles stayed away for your event!

  6. How fun is this? Of course, you know I’ve ridden in the Alps–in my bike trainer, lol. The scenery is so beautiful, but I didn’t have to deal with the elevation. Looks like you had so much fun. I swear, i’m moving to Switzerland. lol

    1. Ah yes, I remember your virtual bike ride in the Alps! Well, that’s one benefit of being injured – you get to do fun things like that!
At least you will have to visit Switzerland one day, Wendy. I will be your personal tour guide, haha!
Wishing you all the best with your recovery – you will get back to running soon!

  7. I love how you take advantage of so many fun activities! I do think running is harder than biking. I did a 3 cycling tour in Bordeaux about 10 years ago and it was so amazing. Hilly but amazing. I love Switzerland and need to get back there sometime

    1. It’s great fun! Over the last few weeks, we had so many events springing up, I’m nearly dizzy with all the opportunities.
Yes, I thought so, too. Although biking uphill can be strenuous, somehow it doesn’t feel as hard as running. Maybe because the bike carries a part of the body weight?
Oh, Bordeaux sounds amazing, Deborah! I have never been there… ah, there’s so much to explore.

  8. I’ll rate biking as harder since I never do it. I’ve only been on a road bike once in my adult life. You may have only done 300km this year but you chose 23 of them very wisely!

    1. Haha, good point! Got to choose the right kilometres!
So we can shake hands as non-bikers, Birchie. I would like to do it more… but I’m full of excuses (too windy, too sunny, too hilly). Iowa-Kim is my great example. 🙂

  9. Great to see the cows coming down. I am guessing the snow will start in the altitudes soon? Those cow bells are expensive I hear, even poor farmers have expensive cow bells as a source of pride to show their dear cows? Is this correct?

Well cycling on flat & downhill is pretty easy if you have the technique. However going on steep uphills for long distances is extremely strenuous. And if it is a race, WOW very tough. I would prefer to run.

We have such closings to vehicles on Sundays in the summer, when thousands of cyclists take over the Rideau Canal & Gatineau Park w its steep long hills.

Mountain passes are great for cycling without vehicles. Such pleasure! You can pretend a Tour of Switzerland 🚵‍♂️🚵‍♀️ Great to hear about this adventure w all the pics.

    1. Yes, in October/November, there will most likely be snow in the mountains. You probably get your snow around the same time, right?

Good question about the bells, Yves! I just checked, and cowbells can cost anywhere between CAD150 – CAD700, depending on size, age and make. When the cows passed, I saw that they even had the individual names of the cows on the leather belts. Quite amazing! And yes, from what I’ve heard, the cowbells are the pride and joy of every Swiss farmer.

I was thinking of the crazy guys at the Tour de France, riding up the Alpe d’Huez. How do they do it? We were going at a leisurely speed – but in a race, that must be incredibly hard.

Oh, you have car-free days too! So cool!! Now you know what you will have to do next summer, right? A small “Tour de Canada”. 🙂

      1. Yes and remember Canada is a huge country. In the Arctic, snow already, In the mountains already in many places as well. Where I live maybe only at the start of December or maybe a bad surprise earlier because it will not be pure snow, but a mix of rain and snow for a big mess.

First I have find a bike. None available that I want to buy. I can try to fix the old one I have, perhaps the best solution for now?

Do you have any cow bells as a door ringer or to call each other for a meal? 🤣🤣🤣

        1. Ok, I had to google it: Canada is 242 times bigger than Switzerland. 242 times!!!! I should remember that when I talk about your weather!

Ah, I see. Fixing the old one sounds like a great idea, Yves. Then you could even sell it or give it to someone who needs a bike. Here in the city, I use my bike every day, but I guess it’s very different if you live in a rural area and the stores are far away.

YES!!! We had a bell hanging next to the kitchen door and my mum would ring it for mealtimes. Woe if someone touched it by accident and dinner wasn’t ready! 🙂

    1. It was great fun, Kim! We were lucky with the weather – if it had been raining, it wouldn’t have been half as nice. That’s the advantage of having a Peloton bike, you’re never dependent on the weather. 🙂

  10. I saw the 13 miles and I was like “Oh that’s not too bad” and then I saw the elevation! I think it’s pretty neat that they close the roads to cars for a day to allow you to do that. I actually don’t even have a mountain bike so I’d have to get that first but it sounds like a really cool way to spend a morning!

    1. There was even the option to do the pass from the other side, which was only about 8 miles… but with the same elevation! So we opted for the longer route which was a little less steep.
It was a nice change to ride on a car-free road. I hope you will get yourself a road or a mountain bike one day, Virjinia – I think you would enjoy it!

  11. Gosh, Catrinka, youre participating in such awesome events and make everyone jealous with your beautiful alpine views! I love it.

    1. It was beautiful, San! We were so lucky with the weather… the next day, Sunday, it was raining all day!

  12. Liebe Catrina,

– Was ist anstrengender?

  13. That looks amazing, what wonderful views. I’ve never been to a car-free day in the Alps, but it’ll definitely be something to look out for.

I did around 2,000 miles in the past 12 months with my ebike, and probably 200 or so with my family’s regular bike when in Switzerland. It’s so much fun and a great, eco-friendly way to get around town.

    1. Yes! I think this is something for your next summer agenda. Your mum might enjoy it as well!

2’000 miles is awesome, Kat! Biking is such an efficient mode of transportation: you get to be outdoors, you exercise your body and all with zero emissions. It’s great when you don’t have to rely on petrol to move around!

  14. Looks like a really fun time — even though I don’t bike. Bikes have always just seemed scary to me, although I did learn when I was a kid.

Plans? I like to plan, but right now it’s just really tough.

    1. I agree, riding a bike can be challenging in a car-centric environment, especially in the cities.

I hope things will slowly ease up for you, Judy. It’s nice to see that your mum is recovering well!

    1. It was a lovely day, Jessie. I don’t bike often, but I really like the change from running.

  15. I dont do any outdoor biking, and it seems so much harder than running to me! I occasionally ride an indoor spin bike. There really aren’t great roads to ride a bike around here. Those views are so beautiful!

    1. Ah, that’s interesting, Lisa. I feel that biking is easier, especially on the flat parts.
Having an indoor spin bike is very cool – that way, you can cycle without worrying about the weather outside!

  16. Liebe Catrina,
    Elke

    1. Liebe Elke

      1. Ein Waschküchenkalender? Mh, meinst du so eine Jahresübersicht? Ja, das wäre praktisch. Vielleicht passt ja auch der 14. August rein, Monschau-Marathon…? 😉 Aber Berlin wäre echt ein Hammer!
Liebe Grüße aus dem nun windigen Rheinland!
        Elke

Liebe Grüsse aus dem herbstlich regnerischen Zürich!

  17. I’m not a biker and I always ride alone. Not confident that I could keep up.

Your adventure looks like so much fun. Keep sharing.

    1. I wasn’t sure either whether I could do this either, Darlene. But thanks to running, I was fit enough to keep up.
You’re so fit, you could have done this too!

  18. This looks unbelievably beautiful!!! If I lived there, I think I could overcome my aversion to the bike and do some rides like this. It seems like such a festive atmosphere, and I can’t believe it was free. I feel bad for Juerg! He’ll have to do the next one.

    1. You totally would have overcome your bike aversion, Jenny, I’m sure! I’m not a big bike enthusiast but I figured that if I can run up a hill I could also bike up a hill. And it was quite a nice experience, too. Running (including pool running!) does a good job at keeping us fit.
Jürg is determined to repeat it next year! 🙂

  19. Liebe Catrina,

Liebe Grüsse aus dem sonnigen Zürich!

  20. Wow! You are so adventurous. I would totally overthink something like this and freak myself out, but you just did it! As usual, the views are spectacular!

    1. You would have rocked this ride, Coco! If you can ride a Farm to Fork Fondo, you can ride this. Although regrettably, we didn’t have any whoopie pies!

Kaum. Die geschobenen Termine werde ich wohl wahrnehmen, aber ansonsten mal abwarten was so kommt und vor allem was so passt.
Liebe Grüße aus dem Rheinland, Oliver

Dann bleiben wir gespannt, was 2022 so alles bringt.

    1. You are right, Zenaida, Switzerland is a tiny country but fortunately has a lot to offer.
I hope the event stays for free, it was really cool.

    1. I was glad for all the breaks we made on the way… I don’t think I could have handled it in one go, either, Jenn! The scenery was beautiful!

  22. What a fun adventure, especially on a car-free course! I can only imagine how beautiful the scenery was. Love the fun cattle ceremony too! I’ve been very terrible about not getting a flat tire on my bike fixed, alas there’ve been no bike miles for me so far this year. I do find cycling to be much easier than running.

    1. The car-free route was a great treat, I couldn’t imagine doing it when all the cars are on the road.
Oh, I’m hopeless at fixing flat tires, Marcia! Fortunately, that is one thing Kai likes to do.
I agree! Cycling feels easier, especially on the flat parts. It’s a nice change in the exercise routine, but I prefer running.

  23. 720km cycling for me – it’s definitely easier than running, I only look at what my heart rate does, it’s tough to keep it up like I do when I run.

    1. Wow, that’s a lot of cycling, Birdie!
My heart rate is much lower on the bike, too. I could ride more hills but I tend to avoid them if I can, haha!

  24. How amazing, Catrina. Roads that become car free for a day. Count me in. That would be so amazing just to just bike and not have to listen for traffic bearing down on you. Those switchbacks are so incredible.

I have only ridden about 150 km this year. That was during a 2 week period in May when I was on the virtual sMiles for Amanda (which also counts riding). Unfortunately I parked my bike once again after a dog attacked while riding. Haven’t had it out since.

I do find cycling much easier than running. 🚴

    1. Oh, this was definitely an event that you would have enjoyed, Carl! It was amazing how quiet and peaceful everything was without the noise and pollution of the cars.

I remember how you talked about the dog attacks. It’s such a shame. I would also hesitate to go out on my bike if my neighbours couldn’t control their dogs. I hope that someday, people become more aware of the negative impact of dogs on the loose. If only they would put a leash on them, that would help!
Then finally, you could get back on your bike and enjoy all those lovely rides!

  25. What a fun adventure! The alps look like such an amazing place to live!

    1. It was such great fun, Laura.
It was something I’ve never done before. But I will do more of it next summer, for sure!
