Running Around Farm Animals

My focus for the second half of 2022 is the Berlin Marathon in September.

Leading up to that, I will be doing a few training races in between. One of them will happen in ten days: I will do the “Eigerultratrail”, a hilly race at the foot of Mt. Eiger in Grindelwald, Switzerland.

I haven’t done many long runs lately, so it was high time to get those legs tested.

On Friday, Kai and I met up with our running buddy Reto, aka MapMan. Together, we did a 21k run in his neighbourhood.

The next day, I met MapMan again for a longer trail run. He had a 30k route in mind. Knowing him well, I knew that we a) would get lost at some point and b) it would be longer than 30k.

The big goal for the day was to climb three steep hills which meant a lot of speed-hiking.

We were happy about the shady forest.

Halfway through, we took a break in a small mountain hut. We had a “biberli“, a local speciality based on a recipe that dates back to the 16th century. It’s a pastry made of honey dough with an almond filling. So much better than gels!

Fuelled up, we tackled the next peaks.

Every time I run with MapMan, we meet somebody who knows him. It happened on this run, too. On peak no. 2, a woman was sitting under the summit cross. She called out “Hi Reto!”. True enough, she was his apprentice from 30 years ago.

Along the way, we had ample opportunities to fill up our bottles. I counted about 20 different water stations.

We ended up running 36k and covering 2’200m (7’200ft) of elevation.

While running, MapMan told me about his run last week. He met a family that was driving pigs up to alpine pastures. While he briefly chatted with them, two of the pigs lay down for a snooze.

The problem was that they refused to get up again. In the end, the family had to leave the grandfather behind with the two pigs who waited for them to wake up.

Wouldn’t it be nice to be a pig sometimes!

  • If you didn’t have gels, what fuel would you take?
  • Do you often meet acquaintances during your runs? -Hardly ever!

  1. So many beautiful animals, cuteness overload! <3 Loved MapMan´s story about the napping pigs, if you´re tired you sleep. So simple. 😀

I almost always see somebody I know when I´m running (or at the grocery store or local restaurants), at least so that we wave and smile to each other. Living in a small community is nice that way, it gives (at least to me) a sense of belonging when I know so many around me.

    1. Oh, I love that, Riitta!! A small community where you know people on the street – that’s wonderful!
Leaving in a city like Zurich, I only know the neighbours in our building and a few who live in the same street, but that’s it. I think it’s so much healthier to live a community where people know each other. Don’t ever move! 😉

  2. I don’t know it I’d want to be a pig, lol but this looks like a really enjoyable run! 7200ft of vert is so impressive too. LOL on the asses….

    1. It was a lovely run, although I still feel that elevation in my legs! I was glad that we took it quite slowly and the break was a nice treat (although we didn’t nap like the pigs!) 🙂

  3. It is always an adventure wherever you run. That is too funny about the pigs that would not wake up!! I am impressed with that many water stations.

    1. I love running in that area, Zenaida. It’s a good thing it’s only a 30-minute train ride away.
I was glad for all the water stations! We probably could even have run it without a hydration pack.

    2. Nice farm animals not penned up. Guessing they are happier. Sleepy pigs

      Gels, 🤢🤮

Dates, raisins & maple syrup in packets work well for me. No weird chemicals or strange flavors.🌞

      1. True that, Yves! They had some fences with special gates that we had to climb over or open and close. Sometimes we had turnstiles or those grids that the cows can’t walk over.
I used raisins once, they’re a great solution!
Ha, Canadian maple syrup! That’s really interesting. Can you buy them in small packets or do you make them yourself?

        1. You can get Maple Syrup in small packets like mustard. Works well & taste is amazing. But fresh pitted dates are full of energy too & have a heavenly taste.

          1. How convenient!
Yes, I should try dates again. Especially combined with walnuts they’re great. 😋

  4. Yes I often meet runners that I know. I love when it happens.

I prefer GU but fig newtons or dates I guess. Never thought about it.

I love your pictures. You run in such beautiful places.

    1. That’s so cool! I wish I’d meet other people that I know more often.
Fig newtons are good! Although I’m not sure whether they’d get my digestive system working too hard and then I’d need to dive into the bushes.
I love running in MapMan’s area. So rural and beautiful.

  5. hmm not so sure about the pigs! It is super challenging to train for an early fall race here bc of the summer heat. How are your temps?

    1. Haha! I’d like to have their snoozing ability! Our temperatures are quite bearable. On that run, it was around 77 degrees with a cool wind. I was happy for the shady parts, though. I don’t think we have your humidity, either.

  6. Oh, your runs are so beautiful!!! I love the scenery, and all the animals. Ha ha, that cow that wouldn’t let you pass- she did look very determined. And I love the sleeping pigs. That “biberli” sounds delicious! I’m going to copy Darlene and say if I couldn’t have gels, I would probably choose dates. I think they would be sugary enough to give a jolt of energy! But I do like my caffeinated gels.

    1. I really love running around in MapMan’s territory! It’s only 30 minutes by train from our place, so it’s quite easy to get to. That cow was doing all sorts of spectacular jumping around when we tried to get past her. So we decided to play it safe.
Dates are such a good idea! Why do I never think of taking them along?
I should try caffeinated gels one day! I don’t like coffee, but the boost must be good.

    1. I love these runs with MapMan! There’s always something fun to see when I’m out with him.

Perfetto !!

Noch 2.5 Monate bis Berlin! Die Zeit vergeht viel zu schnell!

  8. Cows, donkeys, and pigs are on the list of animals that I have never seen during a run. The most exciting thing that I’ve ever seen were foxes, and once I think I saw an owl but it flew away so I’m not 100% sure.

Biberli>>>gels every time. We need to normalize this.

    1. A fox and an owl sound good to me, Birchie! We also saw a deer, but I wasn’t quick enough with my phone to capture it.
Totally!! In long mountain races, we get the biberli at the aid stations. It’s the one thing I’m looking forward to! 🙂

  9. Liebe Catrina,

  10. Liebe Catrina,

  11. Can we transport Switzerland to here? Every week you post the most amazing photos, Catrina! You are a very good sport, too.

it’s been so long since I ran long enough to need fuel! I used to bake my own cookies. Very plain, but of course with chocolate chips.

    1. It was so nice to have these little animal meet-ups on our run, Judy! I love the area around MapMan’s neighbourhood – it’s so green and rural.
Ah, home-baked cookies are the best! I think they might even beat the biberli!

  12. That’s some serious climbing, Catrina! And quite a fun adventure while you did it with your Map Man 😉 Okay, that biberli sounds like a perfect fuel. I’m trying to get away from gels because my tummy revolts (and not in a pleasant way, LOL). I do like Medjool dates, but don’t always have them on hand to take along for a run or a race.

    1. My legs were very tired, Kim! I should probably have trained more on the stairs like you do!
Oh, that’s tough when your tummy can deal with the gels. Even the SIS ones?
Medjool dates are great! A bit sticky but you can always rinse your hands at the aid stations.

      1. The SIS gels are the exception…those work great for me. They’re just hard to find unless I order them online (I know, pathetic excuse).

        1. Ah, I see! Yes, they are hard to get. I had to wait for weeks to get my SIS gels delivered to Cape Town.

  13. I’ve taken honey stinger waffles and raisins on my runs in place of gels before. Gels are just so easy to carry!

    1. I’ve tried raisins too! They’re very handy to eat. I prefer real food to gels, but I have to admit, gels are much easier to carry!

  14. Haha! I need a MapMan in my life! He sounds like such a character! I can’t get over how incredibly fit you are – those distances you cover, not to mention that elevation! You’re superwoman 🙂

    1. Ha, Shathiso, what I didn’t mention is how long it took us. We were out there for 6 hours! So our pace was quite leisurely. MapMan is hilarious, he always has interesting stories to tell. 😄

  15. Pigs and cows and asses oh my! What a fun run! That pastry definitely looks like a better choice than gels. Those napping pigs are hilarious!

    1. We were only missing the sheep on that day! 🙂
We sometimes get that pastry at aid stations when we have races in the mountains. Such a treat!

  16. Liebe Catrina,
    was für herrliche Trainingsläufe!

Herrlich!
Mir fällt dazu “no rest for the wicked” ein – wenn du einen guten Schlaf hast, liebe Doris, dann bist du ganz bestimmt nicht wicked!

  17. Wow, what an amazing adventure on your run! All the animals, wow! I usually use Honey Stinger chews, but I would definitely prefer something a little more natural!

    1. The animals were a real treat, Janelle. I usually only see cows and horses on my home runs (I start in the city and my route takes me to rural areas). I agree – I prefer real food, too.

    1. It was so much fun to see all the different animals, Jenn!
I’m happy we didn’t see any alligators!

  18. Kleiner Tipp, liebe Catrina: Diese ganzen Höhenmeter kannst Du Dir fürs Berlin Marathon-Training sparen 😆

Liebe Grüsse aus dem sonnig-frischen Zürich!

  19. OK, that pig story really made me laugh! I may see fox and deer, but I never see cows or pigs on my runs. Scooby would freak, out.

It’s great you’ve got such a good friend to train with — even if you know you will always be in for more adventure than you plan for!

    1. Fox and deer are cool too! Ha, no, I definitely wouldn’t take Scooby with me on that kind of trail run. 🙂
It’s really nice to train with MapMan – he lives in a nice area, too, which is an added bonus!

  20. Dear Catrina,
all those animals – how cool is that! I would have loved to meet the pigs. So funny they kept sleeping. That Biberli does look a lot like a Dutch ‘gevulde koek’ I didn’t know those existed elsewhere if it is the same. Eating – I can eat everything. I especially like PBJ tortillas and gummibears (they are like cliff shot blocks, but cheaper).
Curious to hear about your Aiger trail tomorrow!

    1. Dear Roni
Ah, to be a pig and sleep wherever and whenever you want! 🙂
Gevulde koek sounds a bit like the Biberli – a pastry with a tasty filling. I’ll have to try the gummibears one day as fuel, ha!
Thank you, Roni! We’re all excited for Saturday. Unfortunately, it’s going to be a hot day, so suncream will be called for!

  21. What an amazing distances and elevation, Catrina. I love the fact that the farm animals are out and about. And the sleepy pigs. That is hilarious.

Figs and dates are what I like on my long runs. Though during the ultra races I will also take advantage of the potato chips offered because of the salt. I don’t buy them myself, but it is a nice “treat” during the races. 😀

    1. Oh, you would have loved this run, Carl! You would have enjoyed all the farm animals. So peaceful!

So many have mentioned figs and dates! I haven’t had them in ages, I really need to try them out again. And a big yes to potato chips! I have a trail race tomorrow and I’m already looking forward to them. 🙂

  22. Oh, that biberli sounds delicious, and yes, so much better than gel!

7,200 feet of elevation in under 20 miles is a lot! That should get your legs ready for Switzerland. 🙂

I love all of the pictures of the animals you saw along the way. I adore cows!

    1. I just had another biberli yesterday – just can’t get enough of them. 🙂
I have a big race tomorrow in Grindelwald. It has about 6’000ft of elevation over 35km – so I hope that the training run will be helpful.
I admit I’m scared of cows – yet they are so peaceful and harmless, ha!
