Do Something Silly, They Said

Last week’s theme of the Un-Cancelled Project was “Humour”. The idea was to “do something silly that brings a smile to your face and others”. In other words, I would need to somehow interact with other people. In a way that would make them smile. During a pandemic. During my run.

My “brilliant idea” was: I would ask random dog owners whether I could take a photo of their pet. Would that really make people smile? Wouldn’t they be annoyed by being approached by a random runner, when we’re supposed to be physical distancing? I was about to find out.

For a 15k, I obviously would need photos of 15 dogs. I probably wouldn’t see that many on a single run, so I decided to make it a project of the week.

I was scared, but I quickly realized that dog owners are the friendliest people on the planet. In fact, it was great fun. Their reaction was always the same: first, a second of stunned silence while they processed my question. Then, a smile of delight: “ja, natüürli!” (yes, of course!”), invariably followed by the owners trying to get their slightly uncooperative pets to pose nicely for a photo. A lot of treats were involved.

And here they are, the 16 stars of the week (yes, I even got one extra):

Aren’t they great?

With that done, I still had Judy’s challenge: find the 7 rainbow colours during your regular neighbourhood run. I tried to find the colours in nature, but things got messy when I got to the blue-indigo-violet theme. I hope Judge Judy will let my “indigo” pass!

And finally, here are 5 funny and enjoyable things that I liked on the Internet lately:

1. This Italian bit of comedy: But first, coffee.

2. This English one about the Zoom Suit:

3. John Krasinski’s “Some Good News” shows. I especially liked the second half of Episode 2.

4. When I’m working at the computer, I usually leave a tab open so that I can check on “my” falcons on this falcon camera. Their perch is in the middle of Zurich City.

5. From 2Summers, a US blogger in South Africa, I learned about this YouTube channel that livestreams two safaris by WildEarth every day. I sometimes look into it for a few minutes and enjoy observing some lions or warthogs.

And now I’m off to look for a teal-coloured shirt for week 4, which is all about “inspiration”. What an exciting theme!

  1. Was mich zum Lächeln gebracht hat, liebe Catrina? Dieser Post! Wunderbar!

  2. Aww, thanks for allthe doggy smiles! Some handsome dogs there for sure, and what a variety! Such a cool idea, Catrina.

My challenge was just for fun, so no judging just enjoyment of your lovely photos.

Thanks for the smiles this morning!

    1. It was a fun project!I started missing it today when I saw some more doggies on the road!
Thanks again for your rainbow challenge, I loved that idea – and it was fun to do. 🙂
I’m happy it made you smile!

Stay safe!
      Ganz liebe Grüsse aus Zürich!

  4. This entire post made me smile! You did a great job capturing all the dogs. Love the colorful flowers too. Now I’m going to be checking out “your” falcons as well!

    1. I’m so happy it made you smile!! The dogs were great fun and so was Judy’s rainbow project. Haha, enjoy the falcons! 😉

  5. You’re just the best–I love how you dove into this theme! The dogs are so cute. I love seeing dogs on my run, although most owners don’t want me to pet them. I get it. Thanks for the livestreams–I’ll be checking those out while I work today!

    1. Haha, thank you, Wendy! Talking to the dog owners was great fun, it was amazing how eager they were to help me in my project. I missed taking the photos on my run this morning. Enjoy the live streams!

  6. What a cute idea with all the dogs! My humor races (as you know, I did three) ALL involved the weather, by default, and my choosing to laugh at it. I got served another windy 5K last night (for the Inspiration theme)…not sure what inspired me on that “race,” but I definitely was thinking of all the Boston runners having to sit-out their big race this year. I kind of merged the indigo part of my rainbow project…it’s a color that never got much attention (in any of the art classes I’d taken) because it wasn’t really as distinct as the others (#myexcuse).

    1. Yes, I remember the awful weather you had for your Humour races! You did well in laughing it off! Seriously, wind again for your Monday 5k yesterday?! Shame!
I am still thinking about the Inspiration theme and you mention a good point about sitting out the Boston race.
Ah, good to have your opinion on indigo – I find it difficult even to remember the colour in my brain, haha!

  7. I have the biggest smile now from your 16 pups! I’ve been taking a selfie with our dog for every day of shelter at home.

    1. What a great idea! Haha, I would love to see the selfie-results after the lockdown is over!

  8. Those dogs are so adorable!! I used to live with an elderly lady and her dog in NYC. Before then, I was always a bit scared of them, but that dog really changed my mind. I love him so much and used to walk him every morning and night. Dog parks are a great place to connect with friendly people.

The differently coloured flowers are pretty as well. It’s such a good time of year for that challenge. The springtime weather is beautiful here in London as well, and I’ve been enjoying daily walks on the heath. Hope you have a good week!

    1. Aren’t they? Sometimes I would like to “rent” a dog like you did in NYC. It must be a nice feeling to go for a real doggie-walk.
I think springtime in the UK is even more beautiful than in Switzerland. I’m not even sure why. More daffodils, perhaps? I’m so happy you’re enjoying some nature walks. Good for the soul.
      Have a great week, too!

      1. I know, it’s wonderful. I’ve just had a ‘call for PA volunteers’ from my council. They’re looking for people to walk others’ dogs, among other things. I might sign up for that! Pets definitely cheer things up.

Springtime here is very beautiful and I’m excited for next year, when I’ll be able to do longer hikes in the countryside again. The advantage of Switzerland is that you’re never too far away from open countryside! For now, my local heath and nature trails are great.

  9. Liebe Catrina,

September morning 2050: John opened the last package of toilet paper bought by his parents in 2020!

    1. Thanks – I loved doing this fun project. It was so rewarding to see the smiles of the dog owners and to take the doggy photos! 😉

  10. What a super cute idea with the dogs I love it! I also need to get out and do the rainbow challenge as well. Too many challenges…but a great way to keep busy. Glad to ready that you had a good week!

    1. I know – so many challenges around! But I agree, they’re good to keep us busy and to focus on positive things. Hope you’re having a good week as well!

  11. Those photos are awesome! I love the poochies and those colours are stunning. As we are moving into autumn a rainbow will be tricky down here.

    1. Thank you! Yes, it would have to be a semi-rainbow, focusing on red-orange-yellow. 😉

  12. What a great idea! I bet the owners loved showing off their dogs. Its so important to try to focus on happy/positive things during this time!

    1. Thanks! The owners were wonderful! I agree, positive thoughts make a huge difference. Have a great day!

So cool!

  15. Those doggies!!! There’s even a pug! I tend to not pet the doggos while I’m out anymore (it BREAKS my heart) to be respectful of social distancing, but today there were so many puppies AND a french bulldog. I was in miseries!

I did the rainbow scavenger hunt today too! So fun! Thanks for joining up with us!

    1. I thought of you when I saw the pug! Although he didn’t want to sit still at all I still managed to get a shot, hahaha!
Hopefully soon you can go back to petting the little puppies.
The rainbow challenge was great fun!

    1. Me too! I love challenges during a run – it makes everything more interesting 🙂

  16. I also have a falcon camera tab open on my computer at all times now. This is nesting season, so the action is really heating up! 🙂 I forgot about the rainbow scavenger hunt. Thanks for the reminder. I will go out this afternoon and see what I can find. I have been watching SGN episodes too. I love them; they make me laugh and cry, both of which feel good. Thanks for sharing the other links. I will check them out.

    1. You have a falcon camera, too! Hopefully you’ll have some chicks to watch soon.
      The rainbow challenge was fun!
I have to cry happy tears as well when I watch the SGN shows. I love it when people show human kindness to each other. There are so many examples of that during this pandemic.

    1. Haha, thank you, Shathiso! I’m happy it made you smile. Taking photos of the different dogs was fun! I saw two Labradors yesterday and wanted to take a photograph of them, until I remembered that the challenge was over. 😉

    1. Yes, exactly! They were so happy to present their dogs! Not one single owner questioned me why I was doing this – they were just happy to oblige. Their friendliness made it a real fun project.

  17. Oh, I love this! The dogs are so cute! And while interacting with strangers is “scary” these days, I think it’s great to do so safely when you can, because we NNED those human connections — even when they are bridged by dogs. I love your rainbow too. I had to look up indigio, which google said was one quarter purple and three quarters blue. I still don’t know what that means!

    1. Thanks! The dogs are wonderful – I didn’t get a Scooby though! That would have been cute!
Haha, the ever evasive indigo! I kept on forgetting what the colour looked like when I was looking for it. So difficult to define and remember!

  18. Holy cow! Cannot believe you saw that many dogs on your run. I see maybe 2 or 3. I am also doing the rainbow challenge by Judy and so far am missing 2 (indigo and violet). I think I will have a hard time with indigo but will keep looking. I found an image that has multiple colors, is it cheating? 🙂

    1. I had to “collect” the doggies over several runs to get enough. There’s a large meadow on my run where many dog owners walk their dogs, so that’s was a good place to find a few.
Indigo is so hard to find! Haha, the image with multiple colours is genius! Definitely not cheating! 🙂
