Well, race day did not start as planned. I overslept by thirty minutes.
My Garmin was set for 4:15am, which would give us enough time to get to the starting line for the Melkbos 15km at 6.30am. Somehow, I must have pressed the green button and continued to sleep. Fortunately, Kai’s alarm finally yanked me upright at 4:45. This left me with only thirty minutes to get ready. More than enough time for an efficient morning person, but for me, it’s a disaster.
You see, I am a very VERY SLOW morning person. I follow a ritual. It’s a delicate, multi-step performance that has to happen in exact sequence and cannot be rushed: Warm-up moves in bed, bathroom pit stop, freshly pressed lemon juice (digestion), green tea with collagen (joints), black tea with milk (wake-up), three forkfuls of sauerkraut (gut), yogurt with blueberries (antioxidants), thirty calf raises (Achilles), and somewhere in there, a fiercely competitive Wordle battle with my dad and sister (brain). Today, I skipped the warm-up in bed, leaving me with a nagging sense of doom, but pressed on. Kai, bless him, silently followed his own routine, no complaints.
By 5:15am, we were miraculously ready. I even got the Wordle done before we left. Fittingly, the word of the day was ARISE. I got it in three and sent my result to our group chat along with a tip. My dad subsequently got it in one:

The 20-minute drive to Melkbos was glorious: I sipped my tea in a mug while enjoying a spectacular sunrise and listening to fun music on the radio. There was plenty of parking with an easy three-minute walk to the start. We picked up our bibs, got the porta-potties done and snapped a few photos. We were race-ready by 6:10am.

The Melkbos 15km is a flat-ish road course along the shore, about 900 runners. We didn’t see any familiar faces at this race.
It was a gun-to-mat start, which is always a bit stressful. When the gun went off at 6:30am sharp, there was a predictable amount of elbowing and jostling for the first few hundred meters. But soon, everyone settled into place.
I felt good from the start. The weather was perfect, no wind, and the course was ideal for a steady pace. I stuck behind someone for a while, then moved on when the time felt right. Around kilometre 5, I spotted a young woman far ahead – she was from the same club as me, but I didn’t know her. Could I catch her? Feeling confident, I set a goal: catch her by kilometre 7.
Well, that did NOT happen. By kilometre 12, the gap was still the same. In fact, wasn’t it getting a bit bigger? I felt frustrated. I gave it everything I had on the final stretch, but to no avail. She finished a solid 30 seconds ahead of me. I finished in 1:07.
A race official took my name and told me that I was first in my age group, which I was very happy about. At 57, it’s not always easy to podium in the 50–59 age group, but it worked out well in this race. Maybe oversleeping should be my new race-day strategy? (Stats: 1st of 104, 7th of 532 women).
Kai crossed only a few minutes later, he was also happy. He finished in 1:12 as 9th of 79 in his age group, 64th of 379 men.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t stay for the official prize giving, but I got my prize money (EUR 35/USD 40), a photo, and an enormous sign. They said I should take the sign home with me… I have no idea what I’m going to do with it!

- Do you love a slow, calm start in the morning, or are you more of a “sleep late, sprint out the door” type?
- Do you wake up naturally or do you use an alarm? What kind? Mobile phone, bedside radio, wrist watch, smart wake-up light?
I am linking up with Jenny from Runners Fly and Jenn from Runs with Pugs for Tuesday Topics!
Well done on the race Catrina! Lie-ins are a bit rare in this house. And even if I tried, my body seems to know that 7 hours of sleep is enough. Went to bed before 9, automatically opened my eyes at 3:30 am! Even that is way too early. Laid around and try to go back to sleep but it was useless. Lucky for some, got Physics questions to do, so kettle on, splashed face and quick toilet, glass of cold water then coffee.
Oh, Monica, sounds like your body has its own very efficient alarm system, 7 hours and done, even at 3:30am! That’s impressively disciplined, even if a bit brutal. At least you got your Physics questions done, nothing like a fresh early morning brain to tackle difficult topics!
Hopefully, you get a little more sleep tonight!
Liebe Catrina,
I enjoyed learning about your multi step morning routine! collagen in green tea? does it work? I am seriously starting a regime for my knees, any tips would be greatly appreciated if you ever had joint issues.
I am a morning person but don’t like to be rushed, I need an hour at least before heading the door to mentally prepare to start the day.
congrats on getting the first in your age group! you are a beast!
Great question about collagen! I have mixed feelings. While some studies show positive effects, the research is limited, and results can vary depending on type, dose, and duration. That said, most benefits appear after consistent use over several months. So, I’ve decided it can’t hurt, and at the very least, it’s a decent source of protein.
I have never had joint problems so far (more tendons). I think you have a very good routine with your strength vs running. I remember you saying that you stretch regularly, which is also great.
One thing I do make sure is to run my regular runs are quite slow and I make sure reduce my running significantly when I’m not training for anything specific (only 40km/week instead of 80km and more).
Thanks so much! Getting that podium felt good!
Congrats on the podium finish! Competitive as ever, my friend! What will you do with your prize money?
I’m definitely a ‘slow start’ to the morning person–like you, I do the Wordle! And that while I’m drinking my coffee (with collagen). I actually do a few other NYT games and then I can proceed with the day. I’m doing this as we speak…
Thanks, Wendy! Haha, competitive streak is alive and well! 😄 As for the prize money… well, a glass of wine tonight sounds good, ha!
Sounds like we are morning twins! Love that we have the same “slow start” vibe. Wordle with coffee/tea (and collagen, of course) is basically sacred morning time. Btw, I nearly failed on the Wordle this morning if my dad hadn’t sent me a tip!
That was a tough one!!!
Hey Catrina! That sounded like a hectic moment in the morning. I am like a slug in the morning. I need my 9-10 hrs of sleep. I really do. I would have been stressed out getting up so late. 30 minutes is huge in the morning. WORDLE?😅💦💦💦 Def no time for that. Your dad was lucky! Good for him. Who usually wins in your Wordle group. Pearl gets it usually in three but sometimes there is an endless list of possibilities. I don’t do it anymore!
Congrats on navigating the 30 minute delay though. That was a good omen for the race. Is 700 Rand a lot of money in SA? Here and in Europe it is not significant, a token. But it all adds up without a doubt. Yeah that cheque! Hah Well you could mount it on a wall in your office w all your trophies & medals. Your power room!😅💦
AG wins are alway satisfying. 15km! What weird distance!🤔
Congrats for the win and your post here. Well written.
Haha, thanks so much, Yves! Yes, that morning was hectic…but everything seemed to click into place, even that Wordle!
9-10 hours of sleep is solid! That’s excellent for longevity. Do you measure your sleep quality/duration? I wear my Garmin and it’s always exciting to see the stats in the morning.
My dad usually wins the Wordle… that’s why my sister and I mostly let him go first in the morning and then wait for him to give us a hint (it’s our trick). Pearl’s three tries are solid! I can see why you don’t play anymore, there’s no chance you can win against a Wordle-Wizard like her! 😅
The 700 Rand (CAD 57) will buy us a few coffees that we spend every week in coffee shops (we usually go after our CrossFit session). Kai is always hoping that I will become the bread winner of the family, but I think he’s hoping in vain! 😂
I love your idea of a “power room” with the cheque and medals, that’s brilliant!
Yeah I do wear my watch. Sleep quality, HRV, body battery. Sleep quality is usually good to fair. Sometimes missing deep sleep or REM and if I have to get up early than not long enough. I can’t go to bed earlier than 10 pm as I won’t be be sleeping at all.😅💦 HRV seems to be low. My base range was 80 to 100 ms. Lately it has been more in the 40 to 50ms range. Weird, as nothing is really different before.
WORDLE. Good idea to let your dad go first!😅 What is your first word? Pearl’s is ADIEU. Perfect to flag those vowels.
Indeed you have quite the morning routine I forgot to mention. Looks like all that activity is planning to live to 100 years at least😅💦 Looks like you got it under control. The physical activity is a great help to on so many levels. That is really the secret to longevity along w sleep for body repairs & nutrition & no drugs. Live long & prosper😅💦
80-100 HRV!!! Wow, those were fantastic stats!
That HRV drop is interesting, though. Sometimes mine dips for no obvious reason, too. Could be hidden stress, heat, or even mild dehydration. Mine is between 40 and 80. I your HRV picks up again soon.
Pearl is my Wordle Twin!! I use “ADIEU” too!! Hit all the vowels, that’s a great strategy. My dad uses “ABOUT”.
Yes, exactly: get old healthily and then drop dead, that would be ideal 😅 I think you and me are on a good track to achieve that! Let’s live long and prosper!
Congrats, Catrina, on your first place finish in your age group. Let’s see, prize money equals a professional runner, right? 🙂 If I hadn’t seen your Strava results before reading your recap I would have been on pins and needles nervous that you might have imploded at the race after oversleeping. Not you, though, you handled it like the pro that you are!
Even though I’m wide awake once my feet hit the floor in the morning, I like to take my time doing all of my early morning core exercises, stretches, etc. before even leaving our bedroom, and I hate to be rushed!
Thanks so much, Debbie! Haha, now I just need to figure out how to add a few more zeros to that prize money, then it would really start to pay off! 😄
Kai staying calm definitely helped, he’s amazing at getting us to places on time, so my inner voice told me there was no reason to panic.
And yes, I completely get what you mean about mornings. You’re a morning person through and through, but those little rituals really make the start of the day feel special, don’t they? Being rushed just ruins the whole vibe!
FIRST PLACE!!! Catrina! That’s amazing. I guess you should oversleep all the time! Just kidding, oversleeping is SUCH an unsettling thing, at least it is for me. I feel so off balance when that happens, luckily it’s rare. Also I don’t have much I HAVE to get up for these days, if that makes sense.
But wow! 1:07! That is a great time and I’m so happy for you. I also really loved reading about your morning routine. I don’t like to rush in the mornings either!
Thanks so much, Nicole! Haha, maybe oversleeping is my new secret weapon, though I don’t think my nerves could handle that kind of “race prep” too often! 😄
You’re right, it’s such an unsettling feeling when it happens. Imagine oversleeping AND not having time for COFFEE (or tea), now that would have been an even bigger drama, ha!
Slow, unhurried mornings are the best! I’m happy that you belong to the same “calm before the chaos” club!
Congratulations!!! 1st of 104 in your AG is amazing. I also got very excited about your prize money until I did the rand/dollar conversion. Well- still not bad!
I need about 45 minutes in the morning to get out the door to run. That includes water drinking, tooth brushing, bathroom, feeding the cats, and a short mobility routine. I would definitely be rushed with only 30 minutes. My husband, on the other hand, gets out the door within ten minutes of waking. I have no idea how he does that.
Thanks so much, Jenny! Haha, yes! I’d gladly take USD 700 any day! Imagine how many pairs of running shoes that would buy! 😄
I love your 45-minute morning flow, it sounds perfectly balanced. And your husband… wow, ten minutes from bed to out the door? That’s efficiency on another level! He even beats Kai. Just think of all the extra time he’s banked over the years! No “silly” morning rituals slowing him down, ha!
Awesome job, Catrina!! Congrats on the 1st place AG, and overall finish as well! I usually wake up on my own, but ALWAYS set an alarm, just in case. I guess I’m pretty fast-paced upon wake-up…I usually have a workout to knock-out before heading to work, so I’m used to not dawdling, LOL.
Thanks so much, Kim!
I really admire your ability to just wake up and go, that’s a rare talent and such a time-saver. You’re always so disciplined with those early morning workouts, too.
Waking up naturally is a great sign – your body clearly knows the routine and trusts you to stick to it!
Congrats on the 1st place AG finish! Well done! That is a stressful start to the day, though! I prefer to not feel rushed in the morning, but the reality is that every weekday morning feels rushed since our almost 5-yo is not a morning person and will fight us on every task, like choosing what he wants for breakfast (he usually says “I can’t deciiiiiiiide” in the most dramatic voice).
I used to be woken by my apple watch on weekday mornings and usually by the 5-yo screaming for me on weekends. But since the incident in Sept, my sleep has been pretty terrible so I rarely sleep until my alarm goes off and am usually up well before the kids, sometimes an hour+ before them… I’d rather be sleeping but I have tried to enjoy the peace and quiet in our house.
Thanks so much, Lisa!
Oh wow, with little ones, mornings are a whole different adventure, that “I can’t deciiiiiiide” made me laugh! 😄
I’m really sorry your sleep is still off since the accident. I hope things are slowly getting easier and that you’re healing well. Those quiet early hours sound like a small silver lining, but yes – real rest would be so much better.
I’m looking forward to your updates once you feel well enough to post again!
I am back to blogging but I had to make my blog private because of the lawsuit! It’s hard to let people know I am back since my posts won’t go to Feedly or other RSS feeds since it’s private. If you go to my website, there is a link to request access, though!
Ah, I see!!! I’ll do that right now!
Congrats on finding a new secret weapon! And to your dad for Wordle in One! Has anyone gotten it in your family chat before?
I don’t like to be rushed in the morning, either, and I’m willing to get up early to have “me time”.
I’m all about my Garmin as an alarm. If I need an alarm, then it’s pretty much a guarantee that I need to wake up before the Hubs, and I really like that the alarm doesn’t disturb him. If it’s a critical wake up time, like one of my infamous 4 AM wakeups for a flight, then I set my phone alarm for 10 minutes later as a backup. Do you and Kai get up at the same time or does one sleep in later?
I bet that you dreamed that you were at the start line when your alarm went off and that you pressed the button to start your Garmin!
Haha, yes! My dad really nailed that Wordle in one! He’s quite the Wordle-Artist and usually beats me and my sister. He does sometimes give us tips, which might either be super helpful or completely throw us off. Which of course sparks off a whole new argument! 😄
Yes! The Garmin is perfect for not disturbing the other person, and a phone backup is a smart move, especially if you have a flight to catch. I might need to copy that. I’m usually up before Kai, he’s definitely a “sleep to the last minute and then rush to get everything done” type.
Ha, that made me laugh! Yes, dreaming about the starting line was very likely!
Enjoy your travels, Birchie!
I choose a calm start in the morning without rushing—not necessarily slow, though—when I’m not pressed for time.
I use an alarm on most days, but I find that that needs to change in the future. For now, I use the mobile phone alarm.
I can see how effectively you utilize oversleeping as a weapon for race days now, Catrina. I’m not sure how secret it is, though, now that you’ve written about it in today’s blog post.
Haha, you’re right, Yukun, I probably should not have mentioned the “secret weapon”! 😄 I’ll have to come up with a new strategy for next time.
A calm but not sluggish morning sounds ideal, just enough time to get centred without dawdling. I agree, relying less on the phone alarm is a good goal. Will you be trying to wake up naturally? How are you going to get closer to that goal? By adjusting your bedtimes?
Yes, Catrina, I will be trying to wake up naturally, and I will need to go to bed earlier so that I can both wake up naturally and wake up on time.
Well done, 1.07 sounds like a great time for this novice for 15 km. I’m impressed with your extensive morning routine!! But I’m like you, I have things I need in the morning and I have to have peace and quiet, otherwise my day is sort of ruined. Of course if we’re travelling or something else that makes it different, I’ll accept something different. I have 3 alarms on my Garmin, one way before I need to get up, one at 7 when I usually get up, and one at 8.30 which I have no idea why it’s even there. If I have to get up much earlier than usual and it’s important, I set an alarm on my phone because it’s something that can’t be ignored if you’re half sleeping. Basically my only routine is my morning coffee though – but if I’m disturbed while sipping my coffee I’ll be upset! That’s my most relaxing time of the day, sipping my coffee and reading, or writing, something!
Haha, I love that you have three alarms, especially the mysterious 8:30 one! I have one that goes off at 9am every morning, no idea why I have it, but I find it strangely useful. We also have a noon gun going off here in Cape Town exactly at 12.00, and that it useful, too.
I can totally relate to your need for peace and quiet in the morning. That first cup of coffee really sets the tone for the day, interrupting it should practically be a crime!
I see that you have your new blog up, I’m going to check it out – it looks exciting!
Amazing finish on the race, Catrina. I feel like sometimes the races where you feel unprepared, or where something goes wrong (like your wake-up time), turn out to be one of the best 🙂
I love that you have such a rigid morning ritual and are hitting all the different parts of your body with your routine. Impressive. I’ve done the lemon water in the morning (not consistently though), but never thought of starting with sauerkraut (although I love sauerkraut).
You’re absolutely right, San, sometimes the chaotic races end up being the most memorable, and somehow everything just clicks once you’re on the start line. 😊
TRY the sauerkraut thing, San!! I know it sounds weird, but it’s surprisingly refreshing first thing in the morning! Apparently, it’s really good for the gut. Even Kai, who is super fussy about food, has come to love it. Just make sure you get really good quality sauerkraut. As a German, you will know good quality Sauerkraut when you see it! 😄
Wow, that is a huge sign for a win! I just won my age group at a half marathon and all I got was a water bottle 🙂 It is a really nice insulated water bottle, but there was no big sign involved. haha! Congrats!!
I used to use an old school alarm clock but I have converted over to my Garmin watch alarm in the last year. I really like it! I never hit snooze. My morning routine is super fast. I wait until the absolute last minute with no time for anything else! Which explains why I’m usually late for everything.
Oh my gosh, Lisa, I’m so sorry! Your comment got stuck in my spam and I only detected it now!
Congrats on your age group win in a half-marathon! That’s a huge accomplishment! You would have deserved a much bigger sign than mine, haha!
I agree, the Garmin watch alarm is neat! It usually works perfectly, I have no idea why I switched it off. Well, at least you are VERY efficient with your time, Lisa! No time wasted!
I need time in the morning too! I usually get up almost an hour before I plan to start my run. It sounds like this worked out well you! Congrats on a strong race and the award. That is a big sign!
Having extra time in the morning makes all the difference! I remember that you get up very early – wasn’t it 4am or something?
It all worked out surprisingly well this time, despite the oversleeping hiccup! Thanks, Lisa! The award was a nice bonus.
Congrats! What an incredible result.
I hate mornings, but when I stop to think about it, I’ve never liked getting up early. In university I was able to really ease into the day, but now I tend to have to get up and get right to the task of helping get the kids ready for school. One thing I am really looking forward to in retirement is being able to wake up on my body clock (which tends to want to sleep until 7:30/8:00 am). Though by that stage, I’ll probably be up long before that due to age?! Oh the irony.
It always makes me chuckle when I see currency conversions. When my husband came back from Japan and my parents came back from Liberia they brought some paper money for the kids in these HUGE denominations…and it’s like a handful of change in CAD! My brother lives in Denmark and sometimes he’ll be “talking in Kroner” and then I stop to remember it’s a lot less in CAD.
Thanks so much, Elisabeth! 😊
Everything must feel so different once you have kids. I’d be the same, constantly in go-go-go mode getting everyone ready. And then, once everyone is gone, you can have that coffee/tea in peace.
Retirement will be such a treat, waking up on your own clock and naturally sleeping a bit more in winter than in summer. I’m sure you’ll still enjoy a little lie-in, even as the years go by!
Ha, yes, those thousands of Yen are impressive! Weirdly, I still do all the math in my head here in Cape Town. It gets especially tricky when people start talking about real estate – “x million Rand” has my brain going in overdrive every time!
It’s cool to actually win money in a race. I think I’ve done that once in 30+ years of running. Congratulations on your finish. Nice job getting yourself ready so quickly after oversleeping. I hate that feeling of having to skip routine and just go. Also, I play Wordle every day too! I got that one in three also. I should have had it in two since that’s usually my go-to word for a second try in that situation. Congrats to your dad! I’ve only got it in one once in all the time I’ve played.
Ha, so cool that you got that Wordle in three, you would have been close to two if you had stuck to your go-to word! My dad only got it in one because of my tip, so it was cheating a bit. Sometimes our tips throw each other off, and then we have arguments, haha!
And thank you, Debbie! Winning actual money does somehow feel special. It wasn’t much, but it’s good for a coffee and croissant!
I am also so slow moving in the morning and also have a morning routine but no as complicated as yours. Collagen has done wonders for me as well and I put it in my coffee. I do love sauerkraut but maybe not for breakfast. Seems to irk for you though! Congrats on another well done race!
I’m so glad you managed to comment this time, Deborah, looks like my fiddling around in WordPress paid off! 😄
Thank you so much! I love hearing that collagen has worked for you! I’m never sure if it really works but I tell myself that there’s no harm in taking it and it’s a good source of protein, too. And haha, yes, sauerkraut in the morning isn’t for everyone… it definitely wakes me up, though!
I like that you also ease into your mornings, it really sets the tone for the whole day, doesn’t it?
https://www.nytimes.com/games/wordle/index.html
Congratulations on another incredible race!
I am an early bird, pop out of bed, and get moving! There is nothing slow or gentle about the way I wake up (although I am incredibly and annoyingly cheerful, so there’s that). I always feel like I’m missing out on something when I take my mornings slow. Maybe I should reconsider!
Thanks so much, Jenn! I love how you describe your mornings, energetic and cheerful sounds like a powerful combo! 😄 You must be a morning person through and through. I wish I could “pop out of bed” like that!
I think there’s a definite advantage to getting that early burst of energy – no time wasted, every minute counts from the get-go. You’re a powerhouse!
Liebe Catrina,
Deine Morgenroutine klingt herrlich unkompliziert! Zeitsparend, effizient, Oliver-typisch halt.
What is a gun to mat start?
I have my morning ritual, but it can be roll out bed, bathroom and teeth brushing, swig of water and out the door for a run — but not a race, which would require fuel and a warm-up.
A gun-to-mat start just means your time begins when the gun goes off, not when you cross the timing mat. So if you’re stuck further back, you lose a few seconds (or more) before you even start moving.
Your morning “quick mode” sounds efficient! You are so right about race morning…it’s a whole different beast. Fuelling, warm-up, all the little pre-race rituals that magically appear when the stakes go up.
I love your routine for your digestion, joints, wake-up, guts and antioxidants. I try to do well, but really need to eat more fermented foods such as sauerkraut.
Congratulations on 1st in your age group. That is phenomenal. You are an amazing runner. That is a really big cheque. I am assuming they have it ready and your name is entered once the know it was you who came in first. 🙌
I’m sure you’re doing just fine, Carl! Fermented food first thing does sound brutal, but it’s surprisingly refreshing — I’d miss it now. Hopefully you’ve got some decent sauerkraut or kimchi nearby.
Thanks for the kind words! Being first in my age group was a sweet surprise. And yes, they wrote my name on the giant cheque… after putting it on the male winner’s cheque by mistake first, haha! Luckily they managed to erase it!
I hope you are doing well – I guess the weather is nice and cold now, just how you like it?
