Over the past two months, I’ve been coaching Sandra for her 10k, and we were both excited about this one. It wouldn’t be her first race, but this one was meant to be a PR.

Then everything changed: her grandfather died just days before, and she had to travel to Zimbabwe for the funeral. The race was off. She was gutted – but I reminded her that all that training wasn’t wasted, and that there will be plenty of races ahead.
On Tuesday evening, I walked to the start line with Kai as a supporter. It was only a five-minute walk from home, meaning I could use my own toilet and leave at the last possible second. Honestly, the luxury! I slipped into the crowd, the gun went off at 6 p.m., and off we went!

The Sundowner 10k route was an out and back. The first kilometre with glorious tailwind was at 3:56/km, it felt like flying! But I paid for it on the way back – the headwind hit us like a wall. I tucked behind the tallest men I could find for wind protection, and it worked… until the last kilometre, when I lost all my human shields and had to battle the gusts alone. My pace dropped and that final kilometre felt endless!

Crossing the finish line was pure relief, one of those deep exhales you feel in your whole body. 42:29 – 2nd out of 195 in my age group, 11th out of 1002 women (results here).

Sandra’s friends were there, too. Tinyiko, bib 2006, ran with Sandra’s number. Seeing them at the finish made the evening feel even happier.

And then, as if the evening wasn’t already good enough, my inbox delivered the cherry on top. I got an e-mail from London – I had made it into the LONDON MARATHON in April! I am so THRILLED!! We immediately sat down to make a plan. I also updated my Garmin training plan and it now says “18 weeks to the London Marathon”.
Since I was already in planning mode, I spent some time in the Garmin app and saw that they have introduced a Lifestyle Logging feature. I already track my training and habits in my journal, but I like this digital addition because you can set a daily reminder. One more thing that keeps me accountable!
These are the options Garmin gives you – it’s surprisingly broad, and you can even add your own:

And as if that wasn’t enough good news, we heard back from all the girls we are mentoring, and they all passed their exams. I was especially happy for one girl, Mahali, who was convinced that she had failed miserably. Turns out, she was the one with the most “passed with distinction”. My heart was bursting for her!
On Saturday, we went to watch Fitchella, a major South African CrossFit event. Seeing the athletes in action was inspiring, especially the Hyrox race, with 8 km of running alternating with eight workout stations. I would love to participate next year, although my brain says “are you mad?”. Definitely another item on my “100 Dreams” list!

- Do you track some of your daily habits? Which ones?
- And tell me – what’s been your happy news lately?
I am linking up with Jenny from Runners Fly and Jenn from Runs with Pugs for Tuesday Topics as well as Runners’ Roundup with Coach Debbie Runs, Confessions of a Mother Runner, Mile by Mile, and Runs with Pugs!
You are so speedy! Well done on your race result, especially given the headwind on the way back. Being able to walk to the start of the race is the best. What a shame Sandra couldn’t run after doing the training. Congratulations to your mentees on their exam results.
I do track daily habits, but I’m not as consistent with tracking them as I’d like—especially when I get busy like now.
Thank you, Melissa! That headwind was no joke, it really made the second half feel like hard work. Haha, as a runner, I know how you appreciate the walk to the start – it feels so much calmer.
It was such a pity Sandra couldn’t race, but I’m sure her moment will come. I think we might try a race in February. And I’m still glowing from the mentees’ results, that news meant a lot.
I hear you on habit tracking! Consistency is always the tricky part, especially when life gets busy. But you’re a list-person, so I’m sure you are quite good at tracking already!
Tolle Zeit, gratuliere, gratuliere !
Viel Spass an deinem Meer!
What? Hyrox outdoors? That’s so cool!
And, OF COURSE you should do Hyrox! That’s a no-brainer! You just need to do some Hyrox-specific training but of course you should do it.
What a bummer about Sandra and the race she had been training for. But as you say, there are always other races.
Big congrats to getting into the London marathon!
I’ve seen the new daily habits tracking options on Garmin but can’t remember why I didn’t jump on board with it. Perhaps I just felt over with trying to over-optimise everything. But I’m intrigued now when you share the details. I’ve been thinking about coffee a lot lately and whether it affects sleep, performance etc so maybe it would be interesting to do at least some tracking.
Oh, I’m glad you say that about Hyrox, Susanne! Our Crossfit coaches are telling me the same, so I’m really tempted, although I’m also very intimidated.
I’ve seen online that it’s usually indoors – having it outdoors is a whole new level of fun. Now I need to figure out the training… I’ve never used an Ski-Erg in my life!
Sandra’s race was such a shame, but yes, there will be plenty more. There are a lot of races here in February, I’m sure we will find one for her to do.
I’m so happy about London! I love the UK, it’s always a treat to go there.
I totally get the “over-optimising” feeling with Garmin. I have started tracking my stretching for six days now and I’m a lot more consistent about it when I have an app reminding me! You could experiment with coffee tracking for a week and see what it tells you – it could be an interesting insight!
Liebe Catrina,
hurra! London Calling!! 😀
Da darf deine Garmin jetzt wieder Trainingspläne raushauen. Wirst du denn wieder eine Zweitmeinung vom Coach einholen?
Also was diese Uhren alles wissen wollen – nee, nee.
Elke
Liebe Elke, danke dir! 😊
Well done on your race. You are so speedy! Bummer about the woman you were training having a life event prevent her from running as planned. 🙁
I love how much mentoring you do! That is my goal when I retire early as well.
I have a good amount of daily habits but don’t manually track them. I love that my watch and oura ring track things for me as I don’t have a planned right now. But I will in 2026!!
Thanks, Lisa! 😊
It was a shame for Sandra, but we will sit down together and make a plan for 2026. Cape Town is a city of runners, so there are always races popping up everywhere – we will have plenty of choice!
I’m sure your mentoring plans will be amazing when you retire early – they way you bring up your two sons already says a lot about your excellent mentoring qualities. I’m sure you will find it very rewarding.
Ah yes, I get you on the tracking. Sometimes having the watch or Oura do the work is just perfect. Planning to track more in 2026 sounds like a fun goal! I’m excited to see what habits you will be tracking!
Woot!!! Look out, London, here vibes Catrina!!! That is SO exciting! Congrats on a fantastic 10K…girl, you got speed!
I am so excited too!! London is my biggest dream come true – I’ve heard so much about it.
Thanks, Kim! It was a great race!
Congrats on your second place age group finish out of 195! Also congrats on getting into London – what a coveted ticket! I saw Yves congratulate you on Strava about “London” so I assumed you’d gotten in. 😉
What a bummer that Sandra couldn’t race, and my condolences to her on the loss of her grandfather. Has she picked out another 10K to run?
Thank you, Debbie! It was a fun race, despite the wind challenges.
Ah yes, you guessed right! I am so excited about London – I really hope that this time round, no injuries will interfere anymore. Last time (two years ago), I had to miss out on London because of a stress fracture.
We haven’t picked a race for Sandra yet – but there are plenty to choose from. My guess is that we will choose one in February. I will need to start up her training as soon as she gets back.
Oooh I didn’t know that was a new feature in Garmin – I will look into it!
Catrina! This is all such great news. First, whew on the headwind. That’s brutal, but you did it – yay! And I love how you coached Sandra, saying it’s not wasted effort and there will be more races. That is such a good attitude. It’s never wasted!
And congrats to all the girls you have been mentoring. How wonderful that it is all paying off for them!
You’re going to London, baby! I’m excited for you!
Haha, yes, that headwind was seriously rude 😅 glad I’m not the only one who thinks so.
Thank you for all the lovely words, Nicole! Coaching Sandra through that disappointment really reminded me that training is never wasted, even when life gets in the way. And the girls’ exam results honestly meant the world to me. Seeing their hard work pay off is just the best.
And LONDON!!! I am so over the moon!!! I’m still grinning every time I think about it. April can’t come fast enough!
I’m so sorry to hear about Sandra’s grandfather. But the training is not wasted and the PR is waiting for her. The lesson that we all have had to learn: there will always be another race!
CONGRATS ON LONDON!!!!! SQUEEEE!!!!!!
Ah yes, you have a good point, Birchie! “There will always be another race” is actually a great life metaphor. We humans are very good at jumping straight to the catastrophic, when in reality there are usually more opportunities waiting if one slips past us. Sandra’s PR is definitely still waiting for her.
And yes… LONDON!!! Still doing a little internal squeeee every time I think about it 😄
Oh, I was hoping that was your happy news!!! So exciting! And- amazing job on the race. You really are speedy! Sorry to hear about Sandra- but as you said- there are other races waiting for her.
And London IS the Happy News, Jenny! So excited – I’m looking forward to everything: the race, visiting London and experiencing all the fun UK vibes…. can’t wait!
Yes! That’s the great thing about Cape Town, there are so many races!
I’m so sorry for Sandra and her loss, but I can only imagine how much it means to her to have you in her corner. I just love that you’re mentoring people.
With distinction! What a great result.
Congrats on the AMAZING finish and YOU GOT INTO LONDON. What an epic day!!!!!!!!! You are truly an inspiration.
I have tracked many habits over the years, but I am currently not tracking much of anything too closely (well, my Oura ring tracks my sleep, but that’s fairly passive and I don’t check it every day) and kind of love it! I used to close all my Apple Watch rings, track food, exercise, and all sorts of other things. I feel like I’ll get back to it another time, but for now, it’s nice to just…live. I think part of it is there are a lot of moving parts in my life and tracking just becomes another to-do?
Thank you so much, Elisabeth ❤️ That means a lot. I really hope Sandra feels supported…coaching her has been so rewarding, and mentoring the other girls is one of the most meaningful parts of my life right now.
And yes… with distinction! I was beaming for her! Her text came in as we were walking home from the race – so many endorphins all at once!
LONDON!! I am so excited! I was just imagining how it would be even more exciting if you still had London on your itinerary and you’d be there in April, ha! 😂
I completely get what you’re saying about tracking. There are seasons where it’s helpful and seasons where it just turns into another item on the to-do list. There’s something very healthy about just living, especially when life already has plenty of moving parts, like your has right now. Passive tracking sounds like the perfect middle ground right now. No need to add artificial stress!
Haha, liebe Lizzy, herrlich formuliert!! 🤣
I have 2 friends doing Hydrox – indoors… and I am in awe.
I am always impressed with your race times.
Congrats on the great news about London!
Mentoring is rewarding. I bet Sandra will get her opportunity.
Good news? escaping the cold for several days. looking forward to the same trail race maybe next year and running 13.1 miles in it. It was such a fun experience.
Oh! That’s so cool that you know someone who actually does Hyrox! I don’t know anyone yet!
Thanks, Darlene! I’m glad the race went well. And I’m so looking forward to London!
At least Sandra will have a little more time to train – who knows, maybe it’s even better to have her race later?
You’re in Florida! Enjoy it! Ah yes, races are so much fun – so many endorphins!
I’m back and I did enjoy… too short a visit.
Oh, that’s nice – I hope all the Vitamin D will carry you through until your next visit, Darlene!
awesome and inspiring….I’ve used Garmin’s coaching bit, but it always seems to think that I’m way stronger and quicker than I actually am…..right now, I’m just spending the rest of 2025 just doing stuff every day, and will focus more in the new year
I agree with Garmin’s coaching, it can be quite demanding. The other thing it doesn’t seem to recognize is a hilly route or trails. It keeps on assuming all running is done on perfectly flat roads!
Enjoy the rest of 2025, Warren! Let me know what races you have on your agenda for 2026!
I can’t agree more about having access to own bathroom what a luxury!
Congrats on your speedy win! You are sooooo fast!
And big congrats to getting in the London marathon, my truly want to run marathon and impossible to get in through lottery. Did you get it by time? Or you just be super lucky! But since you are so fast, I can’t imagine you not getting.
I’ll check garmin. How do you track and what do you track? I’m so curious!
Right?! There comes a point where you’ve had enough of portapotties! 😂
Thank you, Coco! I’m glad the race went well.
Yes, exactly, I got the entry by time. You could also buy a charity spot (that would have been my next option) or through an official travel agency (there’s a list of travel agents on website).
For now, I’m tracking my stretching to see how it works. Every day, I either tick the box (done) or select the cross (not done). After a while, you will get some stats that shows your weekly / monthly adherence. You could add your supplements!
Congrats on the 10k, and that is so exciting that you got into London! That is pretty cool that Garmin does all that. I had no idea!
Thank you, Lisa! I’m using it to track my stretching and I’m already being more consistent. Crazy how a simple reminder can make such a difference!
I’m all for a good news week these days! Congratulations to you!
We need it, Deborah! Thank you!
Congratulations on getting into London and your 10k finish! Your time is about 20 seconds faster than my PR that I ran when I was in my 30s! I hope Sandra gets to run her own 10k soon.
Thank you, Debbie! Oh, that means a lot! You were a speedy runner and I love that you still run so many years later!
I really hope Sandra gets to race soon too. She has trained hard and she deserves her moment.
Good news all around Catrina! Well done to you and podium, and to your girls’ exam success! Sorry about Sandra’s grandpa passing and not being able to race. But through training hard, she’s already done the race anyway (well done)! And sooo good about London! Again, happy to be part of your cheer squad!
I’ve spotted the Lifestyle Logging. I’ve decided to focus on the end of the day i.e. pre-sleep and sleep habits. So reading, no screens, and added a morning check whether I had at least a 7-hour sleep.
-Monica
Thank you, Monica! 😊 I love that way of putting it, Sandra really has already done the race through the training, even if the start line will come later.
Isn’t it EXCITING??? It’s so cool to have you as a cheering squad, virtual or even in person!!
Ah yes, your approach to the Lifestyle Logging sounds spot on. Focusing on evenings and sleep habits feels very sustainable and given your demanding job, your studies and your family, this is probably where the biggest gains are anyway. Here’s to hoping you get to check those 7 hours regularly!
First, I am so sorry for Sandra’s loss.
But what a week of triumphs and victories for you! congratulations on what sounds like a pheneomenal race, wind excluded. Great things are always ahead for you!
And London!!!! Incredible!
Poor Sandra, it was really a sad time for her. But we will soon get together and make a plan for a new race.
I’m so happy the race went well, and I’m over the moon about London! It’s one of my favourite cities and running a marathon there is a dream come true!
Woohoo! Was wiegt mehr?
Wow! So much to celebrate! Congrats to your students too! I bet you are a great mentor.
I would go crazy trying to track all that stuff. And I’d be annoyed by forgetting to track something. I guess there would be lots of data to slice and dice and see what makes a difference.
Thanks, Coco! 😊 I’m glad it all worked out – especially with the students. They worked so hard!
Ah yes, I can see your point about the tracking. I didn’t do my stretching for two days and I felt irritated about having to track an “no”. So I didn’t track it and left it blank, but of course the Garmin insisted an answer. Quite annoying!! But at least it held me accountable and I can guarantee you that today I’ll be doing that stretching, argh!! Let’s see how I feel about it will work after a few weeks…
Fantastic result in the 10k! But I know that brick wall feeling when you’re suddenly up against a head wind! It feels terrible.
Great news all around, especially with London to look forward to!
I haven’t seen that Garmin feature – is it the new paid subscription that offers this? I tend to loosely track some life habits and try to stay on top of them, such as sleep, caffeine intake and timing, along with a few others, but this does look good!
Happy news lately for me has been completing a long race and coming out of it feeling quite fresh and with little to no niggles! We’ve also accepted an offer on our house here in Pembrokeshire, which (if it goes through) means we’re a step closer to moving back back, and hopefully somewhere on or near the garden route 🎉
Thanks, Sean! That headwind really does feel like hitting an invisible wall…humbling every single time 😅
London still feels slightly unreal, but yes, I’m so happy to have that on the horizon. No, the Lifestyle Logging was a software update, so it just quietly appeared in the app. Judging by the way you did your rehab, I think you are already very disciplined – perhaps no additional tracking is needed for you! I do feel more “pushed” by Garmin now… it seems to be working! 😅
OH MY GOODNESS THIS IS BIG NEWS on your house!!! 🙌😀 Now it looks like your plans are taking shape – I’m so excited for you!! Your family must be very happy about it!
And of course, finishing a 100-miler in under 24 hours with NO niggles is an incredible win! That’s fitness done right. Well done, Sean!
Congratulations on a fantastic race, on getting into the London Marathon (woohoo!) and the successes of your mentees!
I noticed the new logging features in Garmin Connect and I am curious to try them out!
Thanks, San! 😊 It really was one of those weeks where everything seemed to line up: race, London (still doing a quiet internal woohoo), and seeing the mentees succeed was especially rewarding.
Since I’m logging my stretching (notoriously negligent) I have become a lot more regular at it. A little Garmin pressure goes a long way for me, ha! Let me know if you end up playing with it as well!
Liebe Catrina,
(Vielleicht Austausch in Unterhaltungen?)
My happy news lately?
Congrats Catrina, on such a speedy 10k! I always think 10ks are so hard to race. That last mile is tough and with a headwind, I can’t even imagine! You always amaze me. And congrats on your happy news of the London Marathon bib. You are going to crush it!
That is such happy news about your mentees doing so well. It must feel so rewarding to work with them and watch them experience success.
What a happy post!
Thanks so much, Wendy! 😊 You’re right – 10k races are brutally honest, there’s nowhere to hide, and that last stretch into a headwind was pure character-building.
London still feels a bit unreal, but in a very good way. I’m excited and respectful of what it will demand!
And yes, the mentoring news might actually top everything else. Seeing their hard work pay off is deeply satisfying. I’m so happy for them!
What an incredible finish, Catrina. It would have been challenging facing the headwinds on the way back. Congratulations on 2nd in your age group.
Thank you so much, Carl! I hope all is going well on your side of the world!
Congrats Catrina on an excellent 10k and wooHOO on an entry to LONDON! I’m so excited for you! How nice to hear the girls you mentored did so well. That is so gratifying.
I am so excited, Marcia!!! I am so looking forward to April when I finally get to run London!
The girls did so well – I’m glad they all passed, quite a few of them got a “distinction”, which is especially nice.
